I thought the opposite when I had a bunch of it leftover from my Alabama vacation. Found good people's to have less coffee/chocolate notes and just lacking in general.

ICS is pretty solid. It goes well against many of the better out of state stouts I have tried.

Much ballyhoo has been made of the sheer number of breweries in the Portland metro area, which tops out at more than 70 and counting... but this isn’t a case of quantity over quality. It’s a case of quantity meeting quality head on. Portland houses an insurmountable number of great breweries -- not good, pretty good, or wonderful, but effin’ great breweries -- that are changing the landscape of modern brewing.

I too prefer NOLAs brown. In terms of most flavorful, really small beers, that one is outstanding.

Ham is right that Ellie's is better, but that's almost apples and oranges to me.

ICS is a very solid stout. I think it's a great base beer.

Hoptagon is meh. Farmhouse IPA is good, but still overcarbed last time I had it. That annoys me. GiTM is great.

Ponies > Clydesdales

But back to the OP, that list is terrible. LA is too high.

I agree with this. We are barely better than Mississippi. It's gotten better but we are still lacking in certain styles.

And we need a good (on Jai Alai and Westbrook's level) single IPA.

Thoughts?

The authors don't know what the hell they are talking about.

They throw Tennessee in at 33 and the bat they are swinging with is Yazoo and Boscos? Yazoo does make some solid beer, but come on. No Moccasin Bend, Black Abbey, Blackberry Farm, Calfkiller, Wiseacre, Old Shed, Tennessee Brew Works, Turtle Anarchy...?

And that's fine, their two tricks are solid. But they aren't enough AT THIS POINT to make the state great. I'm sure they'll develop nicely, but you can't deny the current state of affairs based upon potential.

Nah. I'm excited for them. Glad to hear they are expanding. Unlike Wise, I don't have a problem drinking Texas beer.

But bad list is bad. No doubt.

If there is one thing Thrillist is good at, it is making a terrible list

I have a spot cleared out in my fridge for AMT.

and those two ponies are fricking fantastic. I prefer AMT to any other beer I've had that was made in Louisiana

eta: not produced by Running Monk, of course

No love for their Commotion Pale Ale? If you can get it fresh, it's a damn good beer imo. Also, they supposedly have a really good coffee brown ale, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

I'm not sure about the browns because I don't drink a lot of browns to be honest, but I haven't had anything from NOLA that comes close to Good People's better beers like Snake Handler, Hitchhiker, Coffee Oatmeal Stout, Mumbai Rye, and Fatso.

This is definitely true. I really like Parish and Great Raft but they don't put Louisiana that far above Mississippi when it has SoPro. I think Louisiana is getting a lot of credit for ability to drink beer.

Mississippi also doesn't deserve to be below Rhode Island- when the only beer named in that list, Narargansett, is actually brewed by Genesee.

It would be cool to do a blind tasting of the top 5 (or whatever number) beers per state and see where they rank.

For MS I'd suggest:
Timber beast
So pro ipa
Yalabousha testify
Mystery romp
So pro sinister minister or ragana Baltic porter
