re: Moving to NOLA. I come to the only place that can give it to me straight.

Definitely do not live in the WHD. That has to be the most hellish part of new orleans proper. (exhibit A: it's getting a Dave & Busters). It has all the tree-lessness of the bywater but without any of the dive bars.
Go with Bayou St. John, City Park, Freret Ave area, or Marigny triangle.

re: Local news anchor salaries

This disability lawsuit says that Lynn Zatarain was making 168K at WDSU in 1992. She was the highest paid anchor at the time. That is way more than I thought they made...especially for the early 90s.

Apparently some of the monkeys at the Tulane Primate Center tested positive for something called Burkholderia Pseudomallei and now one of the CDC investigators who was sent there tested positive as well.

Chemex is the best. :dude:
Has anyone on this board been on other local Chicago brewery tours? I'm living up here temporarily and want to try some out. I heard that it is really hard to get into the Half Acre tour.
Those services are a way to up charge for normal food. No one who started plated is either a cook or a farmer. They just thought it up in a business school.

We all still have a chance to try it out. A bunch of those pics are from The Farm which is still operational in TN. I think they have workshops and accept a limited number of new members.

I've only been to one bar in Shreveport but it's one of my favorite bars anywhere...Maurice's.

[/URL] I'm having some beer envy over that Ghost but this is decent.

I agree with this. We are barely better than Mississippi. It's gotten better but we are still lacking in certain styles.
This is definitely true. I really like Parish and Great Raft but they don't put Louisiana that far above Mississippi when it has SoPro. I think Louisiana is getting a lot of credit for ability to drink beer.
Mississippi also doesn't deserve to be below Rhode Island- when the only beer named in that list, Narargansett, is actually brewed by Genesee.

you have to give them credit for their total dedication to the "lube" theme, regardless of how disgusting it makes the food sound (e.g. "salad lube" instead of "salad dressing" Menu)
re: Anyone here been to Istanbul?

Just walking, taking a ferry ride, and seeing the main tourist sites that people have mentioned (Blue Mosque, Topkapi, Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar, Dolmabache Palace) are great. When my family and I went we also enjoyed seeing the Sufi whirling at Galata Mevlevihanesi. The building and the ceremony are both beautiful.

It's true the chemex is the only way to go with coffee.
Most of the equal exchange beans are pretty good. I also picked up some French roast beans from third coast in Austin that were nice.

Roasting sweet potatoes in cubes or slices is definitely my go-to method for cooking them, but they are also tasty shredded and made into pancake/latke/fritter type things. Soup is a good vehicle for sweet potatoes. Here's one I like:

Gnarly Barley's Catahoula Common and Milk Stout are pretty good and seem to be popping up at a fair number of NOLA bars.

How bad does Adolfo's suck?
Adolfo's is great. The ocean sauce is amazing on anything.
It seems like pricing depends on the co-op structure, how established it is, and how big it is. From my experience co-ops where working is required for membership tend to have pricing that is significantly less than whole foods and for better products (probably because they are not paying salaries). For instance the Park Slope food co-op has great deals (but is also somewhat crazy). On the other hand I am a member of the New Orleans Food Co-Op, and I would love to support them more, but I hardly ever shop there because it's too expensive. The pre-ordering situation at the Savannah co-op is a bit like a CSA share. Those usually are a better deal than a place like whole foods.

Paper mache works pretty well and they'll last for a couple of months.
