I've noticed the hate for college graduates has been ramping up on the OT over the past year.

The world needs scientists too fellas.

i'm a dock worker.

most of my old friends would just rather have me around to remind me of how uneducated i am on crucial world events.

I kinda feel sorry for them though because they are pretty much just living a way of life they made fun of while we were growing up.

me? I knew i was screwed and embraced it.

i'm just some guy who barely caught enough breaks to make it at anything. I didn't fit in at college and found my that my job that helped pay for my education was were I really belonged.

Tough?

no.

not internet tough anyway.

This is one of the most thought provoking threads in the history of the O-T. Glad I am fortunate enough to have posted within said thread.

Fwiw, the big huge truck driver types are pretty much always contractors and not actual employees of any plant.

And yes, they're usually pretty tough. Working 7/12's while shutting down bars every night will make you into a pretty bad SOB

The problem is that you are putting a ceiling on your kid's life by encouraging trade school.

Not everyone with a college degree becomes a CEO, but you'd find it very difficult to become a CEO without one (sure, there are prominent exceptions, but these people are exceptional).

I can't vouch for all construction companies, but many of Turner's higher-ups never went to college. Many of them started as helpers and apprentices that worked their way up through the ranks. People can start as helper's, become craftsmen, journeymen, foremen, superintendents, site supervisors, Project Managers, and even become VP's some day. The only thing a trade limits you to is a single industry, but you can rise as high as you want to in it if you're capable.

If your kid is struggling in high school to make it and has a good work ethic, not giving him/her the knowledge that trade school is out there is potentially dooming them to tons of debt with a worthless degree.

I didn't know about all my options and I somewhat wish I would have.

I started in the industrial field earlier this year and I'm in my mid-20's. If I woulda started this fresh outta high school, id be making big bucks right now.

I have a degree but this is where it's at.

Ontop of that my job is paying for me to go back to school to learn the trade and get my NCCER.

I went to school and got a 2 year degree in business. I was on scholarship playing ball, and that was the easiest degree offered. I had no intention of using it. I just wanted to play ball and party. At 20 I realized I wasn't good enough to go to the next level and knew I wouldn't last another 2 years. Went to trade school, and 6 months later had an entry level inspection job working in paper mills. 4 years later, I'm still doing inspection, but working in the nuclear field. If you're good (or at least act like you know what you're talking about) in your trade, there's no cap on what you can make in a year.

Btw, the nuclear industry has made me soft. Can't raise your voice without someone reporting it. I deal with it, so no, I am not tough.
