I'm sure you know but for those who don't...

If you go scalloping in FL you are required to have FL saltwater fishing license.

I'd call the PSJ marina for scallop updates.

They're all but picked over, but if you have any quesitons, youre welcome to email me.

ETA - found a few small scallops and one good size one, but it's my understanding that it's a whole lot better early in the season.

Also the beaches are dog friendly which was a cool aspect.

Well this is very intriguing. Wanna take our pups to the beach.

How's the food? What about dog friendly places to stay?

VRBO is your best friend here and you can filter by pet friendly.

Food is god awful. Bring your own and cook for yourself, you'll be glad you did. You will also save a ton of money that you would have otherwise wasted.

That's speaking for Coneheads in CSB and Dockside in Port St. Joe.

I also heard if you have a boat and snorkel gear you can get to area that haven't been picked over

Yes. The areas walkable from the shore are done. Boat is the best option

Any chance I fish there without being disappointed?

I caught blue ladies and lost a shark in the surf. We had limited time, but I hear the permit fishing can be good sometimes.

We rented a kayak, but I agree with the idea that a boat was needed to really get to scallops that haven't been picked over.

We've been to, and are going back in a couple of weeks, to these small condos at the far end of PCB. Latitude 29. They're older, but it isn't a highrise. 3 levels. Park on 2, and either stay on that floor or go down the stairs to the beach/pool level. We're staying on the bottom floor. Pool is smaller but nice, and it isn't crowded by a highrise full of renters. And you walk up maybe 3-5 steps to the beach. You can be on the beach close to the water but close enough to the condo to walk back up in under a minute if you have kids that need to use the bathroom or grab a snack. Labor Day weekend rates are lower too. We were going to go at the beginning of August but a couple of things came up and we had to reschedule. Apparently the rates drop between now and then and we're paying $40 less per night for 4 nights. That's a couple of nice dinners or the gas to get down there and back.

St George Island for sure. I remember going there as a kid 35 years ago and the only thing there was sand fleas and sea shells. Now there are million dollar homes. But still well off the beaten path.

Yes. But you'll need some numbers.

The public ones will be OK.

Saw a 19 ft CC get pulled all around the bay after hooking a tarpon at the point.

Ladyfish are there -

Get to 30-60ft and you should get some grouper and snapper of decent size.

I'm not sure about kings over there.

The marina folks have always been helpful.

I lost my GPS to an electrical surge so I don't have numbers for over there any longer.

Dog Island...can't get any further away from tourists. Minimal amenities but essentially empty beach

This. I was there a few weeks back for the first time. There were only a few people on the island. We had the beach to ourselves every day. Thanks to some environmental regulations, it can't really be developed much more. Fishing and crabbing was great. It's also dirt cheap. 7 nights in a 3br/2ba house on the beach was a little under $1400.

The only problem is you have to carry everything in and out, but as long as you're not high maintenance it isn't a problem.
