Olive oil

Is this the most over rated ingredient. It has an odd taste but it is constantly recommended in almost every recipe where oil is needed.
I use canola oil that has little flavor and you can season to taste.

quit buying wal mart brand olive oil....
I use it for most cooking, but still use canola or vege oil for other applications.
Also, dont mind the pecan oil either....

Most olive oil branded olive oil is not olive oil...especially the cheap stuff. I use the hell out of it though. I don't find the taste odd.

Fwiw the $11 Costco brand olive oil has great ratings.

Go with Pecan Oil...it is wonderful.
But if you must do Olive Oil, get First Cold Pressed and Columela Extra Virgin Olive Oil won the America's Test Kitchen taste test.

I disagree. You must have used a really bad olive oil
Pecan oil is good, but for flavor, olive oil is king.

I buy James Plagniol, it's a French olive oil that I really like but it is used mostly as a finishing oil. I use canola, pecan and walnut for different things as well.
I believe if most people would spend a little more money and step up a few tiers they would realize some extremely good olive oil is out there.
Another one I like is John Folse and it's made on Hwy 70 in Donaldsonville. Try it.

Yep. I think it's a 2 liter for $11. Good stuff.

I usually keep some nice olive oil around for salad dressings, finishing etc., and also keep some HEB brand for generic cooking. But does olive oil not have a lower smoke point than some others?

The California oils have not been implicated in "cutting" their product as far as I know. Some of these oils are REALLY good. The Bariani label make two of them. $22 & 33/ liter. Their Balsamic vinegar is good also, FWIW.
