Reasonable amount of cash to keep on hand?

Not talking about in a savings account or anything.
Just cash at the house for hurricanes, good deals on _______, money the wife won't see you spend, whatever
I keep 1k. Just curious if that above/below the norm

I don't typically keep any cash on hand, but am about to start doing so. 1K is a good number, IMO.

Usually have 500-1k in the safe for an emergency. Or if I want to buy something and not feel guilty about it seeing it pop up on my cc statement

yep! It's nice having random "fun money" that I won't notice missing. It did save me in Katrina...
Since then I promised myself I would always have some cash on hand

I keep 1k in small denominations. That is my oh shite money. I dont spend it. It is in case power goes out for days or a hurricane wrecks shop.
I had a buddy that claims he got audited and the irs froze all of his shite for several days. I can sustain my family for several weeks with 1k if necessary.

I would think @ 10% of all savings liquid and at hand would be a good number.

As part of our budget, we use cash envelopes for groceries (and related non-food items) and for "fun" money.
Otherwise, we don't usually keep cash in the house. My wife keeps $20 tucked in the back of her wallet, hidden. It's something she has done apparently since she was a teenager and her dad taught her to do that.

I've gone to 1k in $20 bills. I figure in case of emergency you won't have too many places breaking 100's or 50's.

its a good practice to have $20 hidden in a few spots. I keep $20 in my wallet, in my car, on my bike.
It has come in useful over 20 times and if I lose $20, so what? But some places only take cash,or you need to pay a friend or you forget your wallet.

Why?
And the only emergency I'd need cash for is during a Hurricane and I've got 2-3 days to get to my bank which is 400 feet from my office.
No need to have a liability at my home that's practically unnecessary.

to avoid ridiculous ATM fees. Some places, especially in cities just don't take cash. Especially bars, but I have this happen in parking lots and restaurants too.
I would rather keep $20 in the back of my wallet, in my car, on my bike, than to pay $5 in ATM fees.

My bank refunds my ATM fees...so I don't GAF.
Never been to a bar in America that didn't take cards.

I keep about $1000 in the safe at home. Its mostly twenties and hundreds but I need to break that down to more 5s and tens. We keep it for extended power outage / emergency situations like we had with the tornadoes a few years back.
I also keep $40 stashed in my boat. Just in case I forget my wallet when we ride down to the marina. I figure with that much I can at least buy enough gas to get home, or jsut buy the kids ice cream like I promised without having to go home and come back because I forgot to grab my wallet

I agree. I can only recall one time in the last decade or so that I "needed" cash and didn't have it. Adolfo's in NOLA.
Home repair jobs or something of the sort done on the side - they get a check.
Now, I've also "needed" cash, but it has been on Bourbon St at 2 AM & hard working service industry folks didn't take cards, but I don't think I'd normally carry that kind of cash around regardless.
I normally carry around $100 in my wallet and it might take me months to use it.

mine does for other banks but not for the ones that just say "ATM," they often add $2-4 on the amt withdrawn and don't mention the fees.

really? I live by about 10 bars, and 2 of them don't take cards.
Do you live in a city? or the burbs?

Any good bar should take a card.
I never carry cash on me and we don't have any in our house either. We should keep some walking around money on us though. It is just that everywhere I go takes cards and I can swipe my card faster than I can pull out cash and collect change. It is too easy.

I keep 1k in 100's. I know I should keep them in lower denominations but trying to conserve room in my fireproof safe
