Why?

I keep a $20 in my car for parking just in case. Valet/parking garage/whatever and might not have cash on me

I don't get the rationale for having cash on hand. Sure, if a storm is headed our way, I'll go get some cash. But day to day? No way. What's the point? Every place I shop, dine, or hang out takes plastic. If you're afraid to have things on your cc statement, you either need marriage counseling or a lifestyle adjustment, LOL.

For me, I took out 1k during the hurricane scare prior to the LSU/App state game, and figured i'd keep it in a safe instead of taking it back to the bank to deposit it. I've probably lost maybe 10 bucks in interest (at the most) over the past few years. Why not keep a little of cash around?

"Hurricane three days out that you can plan for" is not the type of emergency that a stash of cash is meant for. "Tornado destroys your town in five minutes" is. That's why. It's not really for day to day use. The whole point of having cash stashed where you can readily get to it is for the emergency that you're not smart or lucky enough to see coming. I think of the "oh shite" fund when someone talks about cash on hand, not whatever is in my wallet for any day to day needs that pop up.

Now, cash in my wallet is different. I almost always have a few twenties on my person just to have a little bit of cash if I need it and just replenish it as needed.

If a tornado destroys your house, won't it be kinda hard to find the cash in the rubble? Chances of every single branch of my bank being destroyed are pretty slim. Even if my ATM card blows or floats away, I can get some cash at the bank....or one of its 200 other branches. Or were they all hit by the sharknado too (two)?

I learned after the big K that cash is pretty useless when every retail establishment is closed. Barter was king for a lil while in my area. Trading gas for ice, or coffee for chainsaw oil....it wasn't a stack of cash that got us through. It was the kindness of strangers (and friends).

A tornado was a bad example. Focus less on the tornado part and more on the "unexpected emergency that you never saw coming" part.

Fair enough. I'd still rather have the cash on hand in case that kindness wears thin.

Same here. And at any random time I've got about $70 in my wallet...enough for gas and green fees with a cart.

Guess it depends on the person. I never have more than $20 on me.

Whenever someone pays me in cash or a personal check ( and it happens several times a year and can be up to say 10k, I smash it and cash is in one of the safe deposit boxes.

Forget the doom and gloom, I have bought some nice stuff over the years because I had cash in hand and the seller needed it then. I also would rather some transactions remain untrackable. Why would a person not want cash avalable?
