Wrong, he makes 10.5 mil, on a team that has a total payroll of $74,765,900. He accounts for 14% of the payroll by himself.

10 next year and their salary is already over 75 mil which is a lot for them

Anybody else find it ironic that Cespedes, who is not anything close to a sabermetric darling, was traded to a team that has Bill James as a consultant from a team that built their franchise based off of Bill James' revolutionary metrics?

I was actually reading some chapters from Moneyball the other and Beane was discussing how he feels a hitters approach is more or less engrained in him and can't be changed. Made me think of Cespedes. But yeah it's interesting any time two franchises like the Red Sox and A's make a deal because of how they utilize data

good point. they have 3 guys who can catch and they all hit pretty well. coiuld easily stick Moss in LF

Gonna suck when they lose that 1-game playoff after finishing 2nd in the West to the Angels.

Hey Deano.
A's going all in on this one. Should be interesting to see how this shapes up.
In other news, I think the Rangers won their first series in about a month last night.

f its marginal yet they gain a quality 3-4 starter then the deal makes sense.
Dear god. I'm not saying he's a true "ace" (they tend to just not have a trainwreck year and a half) but he was a staff ace on a world series winning team. Lester would be a #1 on half the teams in MLB and has shown a tendency to light it up in the playoffs.
A quality 3-4, christ.

Meh, we have zero pop in our system. Cespedes is a rental of sorts too. The Red Sox can mitigate his lack of range in LF. Hopefully Fenway being a hitters park helps him out too.
Plus, with Victorino out there, we could possibly have an all 80s arm outfield!

So the A's trade a hitter who ranks 5th on their team in OPS+ for Jon Lester? After they aggressively went out and added Samardzija?
This is a team going all in. They understand that the res of the AL is down, and they have their best chance to win the title right now. The future is now and all that.
As an Oriole fan, it pisses me off the O's are hoarding prospects for the "future" while failing to realize what the A's have: the window is open right now, and the Yankees and Red Sox won't suck forever. Even if the A's don't win the WS, this is a great deal. They are doing everything they can to win right now. Good on them.

Why would you give up Cespedes for a Lester rental?
Lester is just gonna end up in Wrigley next spring anyways

Because that playoff rotation is leagues better than anything they will face.
Will laugh if they have to play a wild card game though

And now Sam Fuld is in the A's outfield mix again

Not only could they have to play a wildcard game, but face King Felix in it.

Disaster scenario:
OAK loses to SEA in 1 game playoff. Lester signs back with BOS in the winter.
Boston gains Cespedes, gets back Lester, and also has OAK's compensatory pick.
OAK gets Gomes.
Ouch.

Now that would be some primetime TV.

Lester is almost for sure signing back with BOS.

@TomCaron: Source w/ #RedSox told me team wanted to deal Lester to "team we didn't think could re-sign him." Said Sox will make offer this off-season.

He's worth that 10 and then some. They have a ton of money coming off the books this year with Johnson, Gregerson, etc. They weren't going to resign him but I highly doubt they didn't want him on the team at 10 mil next year.

I just heard Cespedes was the only guy who really hit great pitching for the A's though.. Just looking at the post-season last year.
In the ALDS
Game 1 - Against Sherzer he was responsible for the only 2 runs they scored driving in 2 with a homer and going 2 for 4.
Game 2- Against Verlander he went 2 for 4 again and scored the lone run for the A's to win 1-0.
Game 4- Against Sherzer again he went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI's
Game 5- Against Verlander he went 1 for 3 and the rest of the team struggled mightily to hit. Especially Donaldson.
It would be something if the Angels caught the A's for the division.. This move getting Lester is just as important in them winning the division, as it is in gaining a post-season pitching starter.
I'm rooting for the A's in the American League. This is going to be fun seeing how the trade winds up impacting the race.
