When/How do we start punishing parents for disasterous parenting?

Obesity is so common kids don't even know they're obese anymore

quote:

Among children and teens who were actually designated by the CDC as overweight — or between the 85th and 95th percentiles on the — 76 percent thought they were "about right"; about 23 percent said they were overweight. Among obese kids and teens (those in the 95th percentile and higher on the chart), roughly 42 percent thought they were OK weightwise, while 57 percent thought they were in the "overweight" category. Boys, younger kids and children from poorer families were more likely to misperceive their status.

this is child abuse

and this is one very easy target. a recurring theme in discussing people of lesser/poor culture is this double argument that develops from those defending bad decision makers/parents.

1. we cannot blame the children who exhibit poor behavior due to cultural influences, from their parents

2. we will not blame the parents or take steps to punish them for the resulting behavior found in #1

it's SOMEBODY'S fault. at SOME point we have to assign blame so that we can attempt correcting the poor behavior(s)

obesity is a low-hanging fruit. this is not only an epidemic, it is occurring amongst all races and it is easily avoided by simple changes in behavior starting a long time before the crisis appears. sadly, it will also be passed down again and again

this argument applies to pretty much all societal ills, from cultures that have destroyed their local education systems to those that engage in violent crime, etc etc.

i really want to know a proposed plan from our defenders of BDMs on the board

Having them spayed or neutered would be a good start.

In my world, prospective parents would be required to get parenting licenses.

I wish I knew

I always use my neighbors in these types of topics. They have a 10 year old boy that is pushing 250-300 lbs. He is horrendously fat. The mom and dad are obese as well. The dad brings home either Taco Bell or BK every single night. I've witnessed the boy trying to jump rope in their driveway while crying and slapping himself in the face while yelling "you're too fat!" over and over again.

I fricking hate his parents. They are fricking killing their own child because they are lazy pieces of shite. The kid is always walking around the yard double fisting poptarts.

I've brought them veggies from my garden before but I'm pretty sure they just threw them away. That or fried them.

Harvest the fat and make a biofuel out of it.

So when religious people suggest that bad morals hurt society it's all" keep your morals to yourselves, you can't legislate morality" etc.
But when it comes to things associated with health, parenting, and other things that hit the pocketbook, well, let's tell them what to do right?

Going after the parents is closing the barn doors after the cows are all out. We need something a little more comprehensive, a little more... old-school. We need shame.

The parents of these young fat asses are probably the ones bitching about Michele Obama trying to introduce healthier nutrition in the public schools.

Who gives a frick, you are going to die, fat or skinny. The bigger problem are all these old stingy bastards who demand we pay for their "golden" years. The overly healthy who will waste away into dementia is much more of a problem then the fat who could do society a favor and kick off in their 40s or 50s.

Less government would force better decision making.

Believe me, I understand that it is not only welfare recipients who are obese. However I would venture to guess that the proportion of obese persons per welfare recipient is larger than the proportion of obese person per non-welfare recipient. That said, on any given day around lunch I can go to my local grocery store and see several very obese customers purchasing 2 liter soft-drinks and large bags of junk food and/or pastries for lunch, all with foot stamps.

Easy solution: Instead of food stamps, people on welfare now have a dedicated account that can only be used at government food depots. Stock the food depots with basic staples, necessities, and healthy food options.

Don't like it? Well that sounds like a pretty good incentive to earn your own living. However, when you're asking the taxpayer to pay for YOUR groceries, the choices should be limited.

It won't solve every problem, but I bet some good change would come from it.

Something needs to be done yes, but what can we do that's not anti freedom and liberty and also Un-American as frick?

Obesity is truly an epidemic in this country and it's one reason why I laugh at anybody who says the poor are living horribly. I mean dude, our poor is fricking fat! Fat! Does any other country have their poor as fat as ours?

I think we should not worry about weight till kids are done growing. both my brothers were fat kids, then grew 8 inches and had to eat non stop and work out to put on weight for football.
