I didn't Downvote you but maybe there's a possibility the aforementioned hipsters would push the undesirables to their neck of the woods? Those still have to go somewhere.

The changes to Government Street are stupid.

Yes, let's make the shitty traffic on one of Baton Rouge's busiest streets 10 times worse.

Or let's improve the flow by adding a turning lane and narrowing the road to divert some of the traffic to Florida and North which were designed to handle the traffic load.

Hear, hear.
I'm surprised at how often north blvd is left out of this discussion.

The Government Albertsons has sales the other Albertsons do not have. Fact. Hit it up on lunch hour when I worked downtown.

You obviously don't drive that little stretch too often.

Also, Foster will now be an even bigger clusterfrick that it is already.

But, hey...BIKE LANES!!!!!!

Not everyday, but most weekdays. What are you getting at?

They did a trial version of this new configuration one weekend and it actually worked a lot better. The cars trying to turn left weren't clogging up the travel lanes anymore. It also made walking to and from the business along the street much easier.

The real reason for this, however, is to pave the way for a streetcar line that will from downtown to the new train station at the Entergy building, BRCC, and Independence Park.

This is planned to be done after the Nicholson one is put in. Then, people will be able to ride to LSU games from Mid City.

probably saw the master plan at one of the community meetings.

I had bought in that area in '06. Was told back then they would be fixing area up.
Glad to see it's finally happening.

Drug Store corner is okay, but they need to do something with that abandoned looking shopping center.

Not particularly, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night!

In all seriousness, this is a plan that's been taking shape for the last two years. There have been numerous planning meetings as well as discussions with local HSA's around there that were all open to the public. The plan has broad support and is most likely going to happen even if it takes 20 years.

The Nicholson Street car comes first, then the high speed rail link between BR and Nola, then the Government street car will link those systems and extend them at least as far as BRCC. Then, the other considerations are whether or not they will take the streetcar line up Foster to Florida and on to Cortana and Bon Carre or if they'll take it to Independence Park by just going straight down Government through that residential area past Jefferson.

Exciting times ahead for Baton Rouge.

This seems more useful than anything going down Florida.

If you are talking about Westmoreland, that's probably about to happen. CHS is completely revamping its track/football field and will likely be moving more of its parking over there. It owns that land now and I recall they were looking into some development concepts.

I agree, but a lot of the wealthy older residents of that neighborhood are afraid of it bringing in undesirables. I guess they're convinced that the only reason ghetto trash don't rob them often is because they don't know that their nice houses exist so they don't want any undesirables riding a in a streetcar past their homes to be tempted. The NIMBY is strong in that neighborhood, I know because my SO's mother is one of them
