did you watch the episode? he never tried to. he walked past him and got tripped. in reality he'd had taken the spear out of his gut immediately after he fell and shoved it in his face. trying to get a confession killed him.

these two should be swapped
what about Qhorin Halfhand? He has to rank in the top 10, IMO.

Here are a few other words about Dayne
"I learned from Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, who could have slain all five of you with his left hand while he was taking a piss with the right" Jamie Lannister to the Kingsgaurd
"The finest knight I ever saw was Ser Arthur Dayne, who fought with a blade called Dawn, forged from the heart of a fallen star. They called him the Sword of the Morning, and he would have killed me but for Howland Reed" Ned Stark
"They whispered of Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, deadliest of the seven knights of Aerys's Kingsguard" Cate Stark

So who killed this badass? Dawn is a cool name for a sword.

naw son.
Btw I agree that Arthur Dayne is the best but somebody said we couldn't use him because he's technically not on the show

Ned, but we're not sure exactly how

It wasn't Howland Reed who finished Dayne?
guess we won't know until the books or show go to Grey water watch

we dont know for sure. Maybe whenever Howland shows up we'll find out. He's the only person still alive who was there.

I still feel the tops need to be Oberyn and Drago.
In a one on one fight their fighting styles and speed would win most of the time. Both got caught showing off and got killed.

Their arrogance is part of their fighting styles, it makes then great but is also their fatal flaw.

The thing that hurts Drogo and TRV is they don't wear any mail or armor so they can't hardly take any blows

Now, that's an impressive tournament.
My list (I'm not including Dayne because he's not a "current" character - we could always go back into the past and I'm sure there were a number of great fighters)
- Barristan Selmey
- Red Viper
- Mountain
- Jamie
- Hound
- Brienne
I wouldn't include any of the Starks in the upper echelon. But for the comparisons of Robb and Jon - my view was always that Robb was a bit better than Jon at pretty much everything (other than refraining from putting the pussy on a pedestal)
My own pet peeve is that the kind of one on one fighting they tend to show and describe in battles in GoT/SOI&F is not something that tended to occur in pitched battles after maybe the Trojan war if then. I think Stannis' charge was the closest thing we've seen to an organized formation used in a fight. I'd think with the level of technology/civilization depicted in the show/books, we'd see something akin to a phalanx, schiltron, legion, at least a shield wall. Trial by battle and tourneys of course would have one on one.

Jon says that he was the better swordsman, but Robb was better with the lance/horse
