My list (I'm not including Dayne because he's not a "current" character - we could always go back into the past and I'm sure there were a number of great fighters)

Yes if you even go back to some of the dunk and egg books in the past you might find better fighters also. So Dayne may not work in this case. There is a character in the books that was cut from the show named Strong Belwas who could probably make this list

Now, that's an impressive tournament.
yea but look how old Barristan is... Oberyn was what in his teens when the tourny took place.

Drogo has to rank higher. He was the king badass in a tribe of badasses.

I'd think with the level of technology/civilization depicted in the show/books, we'd see something akin to a phalanx, schiltron, legion, at least a shield wall.

This is what makes the Unsullied "invincible".

The Unsullied wear little armor. Easy to kill them in one on one battle. That is Oberyn and Khal Drogo's problem too. So they can't be at the very top of the list for that reason alone

Oberyn gave you the tactical advantage of wearing little armor though. can't lose if you can't be hit. can't hit if you're significantly slower than your opponent.

And please quit putting Jon snow and Robb and Ned stark on this list. They don't belong anywhere on a list of great combat fighters.

Jon snow gets totally beat down by Mance Rayder. Robb and Ned were great leaders and battle commanders but their one on one combat leaves a lot to be desired. Neither ever beat anyone of any significance unless GRRM reveals later on that Ned slayed Arthur Dayne on his own but I doubt very seriously that is how that went down. It was 7 vs 3. And Ned was on the team of 7

There are too many examples throughout the series of knights in armor slaying other fighters without armor.

And I know you love Oberyn and I think he's great too but he is simply not on Jamie or Barristan the Bold's level. The show does a poor job of showing just how great of fighters those two really are/were.

I actually think Jamie will become a badass with his left hand later on

I know. But he wore very light armor of overlapping copper plates and his helm had no visor.

He also chose to wear lightly armored greaves, vambraces, gorget, spaulder and steel codpiece, in addition to supple leather and flowing silk
