re: So I've never played a Zelda game: why does it get so much love?

Simply put...
EVERY ITEM YOU EARN IS A ITEM YOU NEED
Everything in the game will be used to advance and not just once, multiple times.

Because when I was a wee little boy and I put both Zelda, a Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time in my systems, it was fricking magic.

maybe old Zelda, have you played the last two main releases?

no, quality. They don't churn them out every second like a franchises that oversaturate consumer demand (cough guitar hero, call of duty, etc.)
Every entry is well crafted and a considerable amount of thought and effort goes into each installment
It is hands down the best video game franchise ever.
and it may be odd to say since for all intents and purposes they keep making the same game, but they take incredible risks and follow their own creativity. They know what gamers want better than gamers know what gamers want. No one expected a Zelda game like MM.
For the next gen they wanted another realistic/dark entry, they got wind waker. Then Nintendo actually caved and gave them TP, which is an amazing game (but many were bored with it because they thought it was an updated ocarina) Then they overhauled the entire puzzle system and went into another new artistic direction with SS, another perfect game.
It also bears mentioning that the series contains what is most widely considered to be the best video game ever made
Ocarina of Time
The series has no equal in terms of creativity (which again is ironic because they've made the same game a gajillion times over)

well I just bought windwaker and legend of zelda on the Wii U eshop.
looking forward to starting the series
I'm assuming the reason the rest of the zelda games aren't on the eshop is because they haven't been ported over yet?
Posted on 6/13/14 at 9:43 pm to hawgfaninc
Zelda 2 and a link to the past are on the eshop.
Let us know how you like Zelda 1. It doesn't tell you anything. Its a game of exploration. I'm curious to see how someone likes it for the first time 30 years later

So what makes it different than other games that do the same thing? Why has it had staying power with multiple versions of it, while other games similar to it might have one or two expansions?
Three things:
Quality
Creativity
Originality
I mean you may think you know the type of game, but the experience is so much more unique than the simple adventure game (Zelda's closest genre). For most of their AAAA games they craft it to perfection.
Because of that level of quality, yes there's nostalgia, yes there's a complete game, yes there's everything you want in a game, but it's done so well. It's all about the quality.
If you want a triple play before the new Zelda, honestly, play A Link to the Past, OoT, and Wind Waker. OoT is the only one that you might have to find creatively.

There's emulators out there. I have OoT on my computer. Now Wind Waker...not so much

That's the only one i would say the computer doesn't really do it justice, but yeah if it's the only way to play it, that works.
There are GC versions and 3DS versions at least if he has another system.

I think you can get a USB controller for it. That'd be the way to go.

will do. I didn't realize till after I bought the legend of zelda that link to the past may be a better game. found that out by seeing drewbies Rank the Legend of Zelda series
also I bought legend of zelda thinking it was the first chronologically in the series. found out after some research that skyward sword is actually first chronologically. ah well, plan on finishing these two zeldas I bought tonight then probably get link to the past
Posted on 6/13/14 at 10:28 pm to hawgfaninc
It's the quality of the gameplay, story and the fact that when you beat Ganon in a link to the past you feel like you've actually accomplished something that was hard as shite to do.

If you go to the Wii channel and use the Wii shop Majora's Mask is supposed to be on there, and theres a vocal part of the fan base that believe that game is better than Ocarina of Time.
You'd have to go get a classic controller to play it though

probably do this for OoT unless it gets ported over to the Wii U between now and when I'm finished with windwaker, LoZ, and LttP.

I said it in the other thread, but I'll say it here too:
I think I liked my play of Majora's more because it's so unique and weird (part of that is b/c of my experience growing up with Zelda). It is a brilliant game, buuutttt....
OoT is a game that transcends. Honestly. It's a supremely crafted game, one of the best. Part of that is because it's so familiar, yet so new all at the same time. It HAD to walk a very fine line between being classic-centered, but future focused which means it doesn't take certain risks that MM did.
If I had to pick a game to play again, that game would be MM. If I had to pick a game to say that everyone should play once, that game is OoT.
(Die hard fans of MM are die hard, probably because they have previous experience with Zelda. It's MM's place in the Zelda canon that makes it so awesome.)

So nostalgia then?
Nostalgia typically doesn't hold up when you start playing a game again.
Example: goldeneye, the nostalgia isn't enough to get me to play past a couple levels, the game just didn't stand the test of time.
I'm replaying OOT right now, and it for sure stood the test of time. It's a great game.
Include me in the group that thinks MM is the best LoZ game ever. The game is masterfully crafted whether it was intentional or not.
