Can we talk about "Rape Culture?"

I guess I have not been following along, but see this creeping up more and more. Most recently today read how some object to Miss Nevada's suggestion women learn to defend themselves in order to be protected. Read on her the other day of a kid at Occidental is being expelled for having consensual sex.
So, where did this come from? Is this just a new attempt at self victimization? Have rapes increased? I can't recall a point in my life when rape was acceptable.
Is the crux of this just that men are evil/war on women call to action? Or is there an actual increase in rapes occurring in our society?

Exactly.

I would suspect that like all violent crime, rape stats are actually declining. But if you change the definition...

I don't think rape is increasing, but maybe the number of rapes reported to authorities in increasing? Not sure. It's such a difficult crime to prove, and it's usually a huge burden on the victim to come forward. A friend of mine claims she was raped in college, and I have no reason not to believe her, but she didn't report it and it had a profound effect on her for several years.

If she had been prosecuted, the guy she eventually murdered might still be alive. It is a strange world.

The hard sell for me is attaching 'culture' to the act. What exactly does it mean?

yes.
I will give you the example - "candy is dandy but liquor is quicker." If you are giving a female enough alcohol so that her capacity is diminished to the point she cannot consent, you are raping her. Woman can also rape men by doing the same thing.
But the concept of getting a girl drunk so you can have sex with her is common place, and this is rape.

Yes. You are correct. Are all people legally intoxicated incapable of consenting to sex?

Are you forcing the alcohol down her throat?

Of course not. The problem is the line is different for everyone, as alcohol effects people differently. And relationships are different too. Getting drunk with your wife of 20 years and knocking boots is very different than getting a girl drunk on your first date and then sleeping together.

What is the percentage of false accusations?
Is that a "culture"? Do we have a culture of false rape allegations?

Check this link as a starting point. You can explore the rape crisis all you want at this starting point and you will conclude that this is an extremely exacerbated issue promoted by a bunch of kooks.
Is that shite real?

quote:Good point. I had someone in LE tell me they don't like to prosecute women who falsely cry "rape" because it may discourage legitimate rape victims from coming forward. Total bullshite.
Crystal Gail Mangum was never prosecuted for lying about the Duke Lacrosse rape.

Sure. And here's where you part company with the driving proponents of the idea that we live in a "rape culture."
