Periodicals all come out at the same time. There should be little question as to whether or not you have them. If you have annuals like we have, then it's a trickle, and not nearly as many overall.

We must be just south for them. Haven't seen many.

We had the periodicals here a couple of years ago. Holy crap, what a noise. Those things were everywhere. Deafening. WAY louder than the annual cicadas. Those are nice.

Oddly, I'm 37, and this was the first time I've experienced the periodical cicadas. We moved around several times when I was in my teens, so likely I was just in the wrong place on the wrong years.

They have been loud near the end of Tiger Bend for several weeks, but as a previous poster noted, they do not seem to be as loud as 2001. Really one of those wonders of nature (although the look like little aliens with those red eyes).

We've been dealing with them in St Franny for about two weeks and they are rattling the walls. Can't go away soon enough.

On another note, the fireflies must have hatched recently. The back yard was lit up like a runway last night.

I know this has been addressed, but who makes a map with different symbols but does not include a legend.

That is map making 101, seriously, you learn that the first day about maps.

Brown symbols on the map above were generated from verified records in the Cicada Central Database on 20 January 2013.

Blue symbols on the map are based on Marlatt (1923).

Gold symbols are based on Simon (1988); smaller symbols are records with a lower degree of certainty.

These records have not been field checked.

A project is currently underway to make new maps of periodical cicada broods. See the Magicicada mapping project homepage and the Geospatial Data Clearinghouse.

For those of you who just failed at internet.

so are those the 16-17 year cicadas? Must suck being stuck underground for over a decade, pop out to get your freak on then get immediately eaten by a blue jay.

So, there is a 2015 brood near me, but I will have to drive a bit to see/hear it. May do that today at lunch.

Thought I was hearing tire noise. may have been. At that flooded bottom, it became clear. A constant whir. Was hoping to see some in driveways like I hear is going on in Grant. Did not.
