Getting better all the time, now up to 700k miles driven, and they are working hard on city driving.

As it turns out, what looks chaotic and random on a city street to the human eye is actually fairly predictable to a computer. As we’ve encountered thousands of different situations, we’ve built software models of what to expect, from the likely (a car stopping at a red light) to the unlikely (blowing through it). We still have lots of problems to solve, including teaching the car to drive more streets in Mountain View before we tackle another town, but thousands of situations on city streets that would have stumped us two years ago can now be navigated autonomously.

The future of the human race is to become completely at the mercy of machines too complex for them to understand.

I actually like driving...

I do too, but I absolutely hate the fact that other people are driving all around me.

I get what you are saying but what makes you think automated cars would be any better?
Also think about what will happen when the automated system fails and we are stuck with people with little to no experience driving bc they are so reliant on the automation?

Kids born today may never actually drive a car. Or own one. They'll summon one via whatever personal computing devise we will use in 15 years get dropped off and schedule another to pick them up

Doubt it..

Because they don't get drunk, get tired, talk on the phone, etc. They pay attention 100% of the time, and can see 360 degrees at once, and they can see at night. They won't get road rage. They will also follow every rule of the road, to the letter, 100% of the time.

These would have to be so common for so long before the average person wouldn't be able to drive, that by then the system will be fail-proof. There will be so much redundancy and fallbacks that it would take an apocalyptic scenario for it to completely fail, in which case learning how to drive a car will be the least of our problems.

Thanks for bringing some sanity.
Things like this won't happen if we have automated driving vehciles.

Vehicle ownership will definitely still be a thing. Having your vehicle come pick you up will be awesome.

I would think that once most cars are automated it'd probably look frightening from afar (or the back seat). The scariest ride of my life was a cab ride from the airport in New York. The cabbie was zigging and zagging through traffic with a precision that was frightening in real time, but impressive when I arrived at my destination fully intact. With the improved precision and reaction time computers would offer, they could easily drive "worse" than the New York cabbie if we allow them to.
