My parents and my husband's parents were not from the South, so neither of us was raised to say it. But we both had friends' parents who insisted on its usage, so we do say it quite often. We try to encourage our kids to also, but I think for us it's more out of the expectation that people around here should use those terms.

While my usage of the terms is done now as a show of respect towards customers, clients or service people, I honestly don't see a "forced" sir or ma'am to be a sign or respect. Kind of hard to explain...

My first day at my job in MN the woman in HR asked me if I was former military because I kept responding yes/no ma'am to her. I told her no, just a southerner

Yes, but I've met people in a professional setting in the last few years who get highly upset when referring to them as "sir" although they are much older than me. I'm sorry, but that's how I was raised

I would have to make myself not say it to an elder. It's engrained in me. Which can cause some funny looks when you get above the Mason Dixon. There will be a dude by along here at some point who teaches his kids not to say it. Can't remember what his handle is, but he's coming..

I find I use ma'am a lot more. It's usually well received.

Depends. As I've gotten older (late 20s now) I use it less than when I was younger, but I will now and then. It's not out of disrespect, there just really aren't that many occasions where it's necessary. At work I have a pretty casual relationship with all my superiors, and my direct boss that I deal with daily is the same age as me. If I'm addressing someone fairly older I will, but day in day out there really isn't a need for it.

Yep. I do it with some of the other attorneys with whom I work, especially middle age and above. Some of them take offense to it but it's a habit that I can't quite break.

Of course I do

And the kids at school get in trouble for not using them also.

I remind them often..."yes WHAT?"

Went out to Los Angeles a couple years back (was probably still in high school) and I'm talking to this lady at a museum (in her 40's with a couple kids running around). So we're talking for a minute, and I answered one of her questions with "yes ma'am". This lady legit got pissed at me for calling her "ma'am". Told me that she is not old and you only say that to old people. She thought I was being disrespectful

Perhaps they'd prefer you to address them as Yankee assholes?

Always, and I need to move to the south, because it pisses me off when people don't show strangers even the slightest bit of respect.

If I open a door, you can say thank you. I went out of my way for you, you can mutter a few words.

I realize you're capable of opening a door, but it's still a courtesy.

Yes sir I do and I will continue to do so as a sign of respect, and the fact that my grandparents would reach down from heaven and slap me on the head if I didn't respect my elders like they taught me.

All the time, if someone looks older than me, they get sir/ma'am.
I was raised that way, and my son will be too.
