Drinking alcohol 3 days before surgery ?

How bad is it to drink a little beer that close to surgery?
I'm having brain surgery to remove a benign tumor Tuesday morning. I'm going to the Strawberry Festival Saturday for a little while. Is a few beers gonna be all that bad for me?

A little booze before brain surgery never hurt anybody!

Sams thing I keep telling the lil lady. Of course she disagrees and I'm sure there's not a dr out there that's gonna tell me it's ok to drink beer.

Why would it be bad? I've never had a real surgery before I wouldn't know.

It thins your blood to much from what the wife is saying.

3 days before? Hopefully you metabolize alcohol a little faster than that.
btw, you are a better man than me I would have called the wife out about not being a doctor and giving me medical advice.

I was joking with my last post, I hope that was clear, but a few beers 3 days before is NO big deal since the booze will be 100% of your system way before your procedure.

well alcohol can thin your blood, I guess it would not be a big risk unless you consumed a lot of alcohol, and not to worried about the possibility of a bleed.

Not a big deal at all. And I can't say I've ever heard of this notion that alcohol "thins" the blood. If your wife is referring to the fact that mild to moderate alcohol intake is protective against heart disease and strokes (i.e. may help prevent clots in heart and brain vessels) then that does have some scientific merit. But I would say the impact on surgical bleeding wouls be minimal at worst. Typically our concerns with surgical bleeding are in patients who take blood thinning medications chronically or have some acquired or hereditary disease that affects clotting.
So as long as you are not a chronic alcoholic with poor nutrition or liver cirrhosis your blood should clot just fine. Give yourself a few days to recover if you plan on getting sloshed - being dehydrated and feeling hungover is not how you want to face your procedure. Enjoy the strawberry festival but remember everything in moderation.

I had a few beers the night before my biopsy last week...no problems. But probably not DR recommended

Good luck with the surgery, you know one of the recovery metrics is they chart how quickly you come up from the anesthesia and what your mental function is at that point. Be very careful at that point; the one thing you do NOT want to say to them is "Hoddy Toddy".

Hell, I'd go ahead and have a little pop right before he cuts.
Settles the nerves and helps the anesthetic work better.

I would give yourself at least 24 hours of no alcohol but a few beers 3 days before shouldn't be a big deal. Of course your doctor has the final say.

Have a few beers 3 days before a surgery is going to have absolutely zero effect. You could probably get trashed on Saturday and it would have no effect whatsoever. There isn't going to be any alcohol left in your system by Tuesday unless you keep the drinking going. Your body will do its job.
ETA: I'm not a doctor or anything, just my opinion.

A lot of surgeries occur within a few hours after hours drinking. That's why they need surgery. ie Hold my beer and watch this or drunk drivers.
Have a few beers and enjoy.
