People love BREC parks. They don't know or care about surpluses, they just want the neighborhood park to stay clean and safe.

I agree.

I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of EBR citizens have no idea that BREC has over $81 million stashed away in its various bank accounts yet is saying if today's tax proposals, which generate $23 million/year, are not renewed, BREC will have to shut down parks, lay off workers, blah, blah, blah.

It's a load of crap! BREC could operate for over 3 years from its bank accounts to replace the loss of the revenue from these renewals without affecting any of its parks.

But it's a moot point. The renewals will be overwhelmingly approved and BREC's bank accounts will continue to grow. (They increased by $10 million just in 2013.)

It's a shame they have that much money and their golf courses are absolutely horrible.

Voted no at 8:30 this morning and I was #50 for L - Z. This was in Central so there will be a heavier voter turnout since there is a big election in the area. Central will be the difference since there will be a higher voter turnout in that area. It will be interesting to see.

Yeah, I forgot about how the mayor and PC election will probably create a heavier turnout in Central than the rest of the parish.

With the broken promises and other missteps BREC has made to Central, I would think some people there might not be in a very supportive mood for them.

He has pushed BREC real hard on the development of bike paths connecting various BREC properties, such as Farr Park south of LSU to downtown along the levee and between downtown and Memorial Stadium, which is also a BREC facility. He has also urged BREC to develop the bike path parks along Bayou Fountain and Bayou Duplantier from the Mall of Louisiana to BREC's Olympia Stadium/Sports Complex.

I'm not saying the bike paths are a bad idea, but it's just examples of how Holden has "influenced" BREC spending, which is what you asked for.

The central effect will be interesting to see. I think I was #20 or so to vote in my precinct today at 3:00. I have some great memories of playing at BREC parks in the summer. They had an employee out there and they provided all kinds of sports equipment and we basically played from 8-11 and 12-3 each day. They no longer do this, which is a shame. BREC has made some strides in Zachary, but I would like to see Zachary run its own parks (besides the one baseball complex we have). It will probably never happen, but I can dream.

They also treat most of their employees poorly.

Vote No
Sad part is maybe 6 people voted including me by mid afternoon.

Now I am scared that I will start agreeing with LSU Russian, my hair will grow long, and I will start playing the guitar.

Early voting = 60% yes; 40% no.

ETA: Side note for those that love the drama. Deedy has 31% of the early vote v. 65% for the front runner.

These are great ideas any way you slice them (considering that they have the money). I hope they continue such bike path developments to the point that most of the major parks and landmarks around town have bike paths connecting them. I think it would be great to be able to, through a system of such routes, go from Santa Maria to the Mall of Louisiana, to the LSU lakes and City Park, to downtown, and to Independence Park
