Can he really make an ok living without a degree?
Posted on 3/25/14 at 10:12 pm to madamsquirrel
No, kick his arse. He can make a living, then be bound to some back breaking blue collar job forever. That ain't a life.

What does he want to do?
Posted on 3/25/14 at 10:13 pm to madamsquirrel
Is there anything he is passionate about?
Posted on 3/25/14 at 10:13 pm to madamsquirrel
Of course he can. There are plenty of good careers out there that dont require a degree.

Maybe if mom paid him attention and got off TD he would want to...Poor kid.

All depends upon his work ethic. A major strike against him already will be that he didn't have the passion, commitment, dedication, endurance, etc. to make it through college - so why should an employer believe that he can make it at their company?

It depends on his interests and work ethic.

absolutely. Send him to vo-tech school so he can become an AC tech, welder, mechanic, machinist, electrician, carpenter, plumber, ironworker, ect.
Or, sent him to a 2 year ptech school so he can make it in the oil industry.
Not everyone needs to or even should go to college. In louisiana, over the next 5 years, there will be twice as many construction jobs for skilled labor than there are laborers to work them. If he doesn't want to go to college, encourage him to get a trade. If he goes to trade school, but doesn't like it, then push him towards college (let him choose from engineering, CM, ISDS, geology, or accounting).

Successful people without degrees usually don't work for someone else.

Who the hell doesn't want to go to college?
That's just really strange to me
Yea, frick partying and having no responsibility for 4+ years. I want to just go get a job and not have any fun at all straight out of high school. Sounds great.

He'll be better off if he gets a trade.

Partying takes money. If your parents don't bankroll you with enough money to party (mine didn't) and your major is especially time demanding (like mine was), college isn't 4 years of partying. It's mostly just homework, tests, and classes. I can totally get why someone would skip that to go straight to work where they make 50k/year straight out of high school and get hammered every night at the Texas Club.

sure...I have made damn good money both with and without a degree...
fact is, if he choses not to go to college, he really needs to get some skills to make decent money...something like plumbing, welding, etc...
basically, you just have to do more physical work in less comfortable environment if you don't have a degree...also typically work a lot more overtime without a degree...
