Seeking to restore public trust after allegations made in a recent state audit of its graduation records, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board voted unanimously Thursday to direct Superintendent Bernard Taylor to find an outside group to conduct yet another, more extensive audit.
quote:
“It’s inherent upon us as community members to say that we feel that these allegations, allegations, allegations, and I’ll say that another time, allegations, have not been proven to be true,” state Rep. Pat Smith, D-Baton Rouge, said of the state audit.
quote:
“Continue to stand for what’s right,” said Carolyn Hill, a member of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, to board members.
quote:
“There is an effort among others to attack the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, to close it down and give it to other folks,” said state Rep. Alfred Williams, D-Baton Rouge.
quote:
Rep. Smith questioned whether the state really does conduct random audits similar to the one the local school system just underwent.
“When I know that one district has been audited for 15 years, I know there’s nothing random about it,” she said.

Now this is a plan I can get behind.

The DOE audit said that some kids got diplomas they didn't earn. Names were not published for obvious reasons.
Any denials ?

I'm glad they're focusing on education

It amazes me how fast Baton Rouge turned into New Orleans. Thanks Katrina!

This does not excuse the record fixing, which I think really does happen - but, they have a point. The state can use selective investigation as a tool to hurt political enemies, just like the Fedgov can.
think of the tea partiers who got audited. Nobody is saying the tea partiers should get a free pass on cheating on taxes but the scandal is real.

And just how long will it take for this outside group to conduct this audit? The EBRPSB will delay any corrective measures claiming they need the results of their own audit to determine what happened and whether any corrective actions are necessary. Meanwhile the issue will recede from the public's attention, and they will go about business as usual. In a couple of years the audit will be dropped and the matter swept under the rug.

Ding!
And, in the meantime, they will point to the DOE's audit as "acquisitions" and "witch hunt."

close down and give it to other folks why not? Let's give it a try.

Yeah, we know Baton Rouge schools were great and there was no crime before Katrina.
Btw, Katrina washed away the N.O. school board, which might have been the worst in the country. Most of the schools are run by a charter system now, with many of those under state control and they are doing pretty well.
It was hilarious to see the old school ignorant racist assholes a few years after Katrina trying to whine and complain that "they" wanted the control of "their" schools again.
Fcktards.

Two things:
1) Members of the tea party are not part of the government. The school system is. I have no problem with random audits of public institutions since we all have waste money on them.
2) I don't recall the audits targeted at Democrat's opponents revealing much in the way of corruption.

I agree. Let's hope the powers that be in Baton Rouge take this audit, the St George movement, and the effort to create ISDs as a sign that something has to be done about education in East Baton Rouge.

I think that is happening.
Taylor presents plan
Between this and BRAC, something is going to happen.
Of course as always, the devil is in the details.

but, they have a point.
The DOE people say they conduct regular audits, Pat Smith say they do not.
Pat smith is the same person that blamed SG for everything, now she claims it's all political.
Frankly, I do not believe her. It's up for her to prove me wrong. I think she'll say just about anything to defend the status quo.
But we have a state audit, conducted by the DOE. It makes specific charges and generalizations. Are the specific charges false? Did certain students graduate that didn't have the grades or not?
It seems to me that if these students did have the grades it would be easy to say, DOE you are wrong. These children did have the credentials to graduate. But that isn't what the EBR School System people are saying.

From the link in the OP:
It sounds to me the board is approaching it the correct way. If they used the school system's own employees to review the audit's claims, no one would have trusted their results. You St Georgeistas would have been (correctly) saying it was going to be a cover up if the same people who made the screw ups were going to be the ones reviewing the screw ups.
This board is so blindly against anything the board does, the board gets criticized even when it tries to do the right thing.
If they find fraud, I hope someone goes to jail, especially if the fraud cost taxpayers money.
No surprise there. By my count this is the second time the SG organizers have gone MIA from a meeting where they could have voiced their concerns and scored points for their "cause." What are they scared of? What are they hiding? WHY are they hiding?!?
And to Poodle who asked how long will the board take to answer the state's audit, the school board is required to report its corrective action plan to the state by April 4. That has been reported numerous times. I guess tax season has you too busy to keep up with the facts.
quote:
Board President David Tatman said the review needs to be done by outsiders in order to clear the stain left upon school system employees.
“Everybody is impugned by this,” Tatman said. “This audit gives us the opportunity to dig down deeper … and keep this from ever happening again.”

Meanwhile, St. George supporters, days after labeling the state audit the worst scandal in parish history and calling for the resignations of those involved, failed to show up at Thursday’s meeting despite a call to their members to pack the board meeting.

Sure they can. But it's hard to give the school system the benefit of the doubt when they've been a shitty school system for a LONG time now.

You sound a little tin-foily here.
If 'by powers that be" you mean teachers unions...well I might agree with you.
If you mean wealthy baton rouge business owners and the organizations they contribute to: BRAF and BRAC; then I am going to have to disagree.
They want to see a functioning school system as much as anyone. The push to eliminate the deseg case was by "the powers that be."
