I'm not sure what you're upset about here. This is basically an campaign to address aids issues in the black community.

Im sorry they have a picture of Dr. King on a billboard equating AIDS to a racial issue. As if to say that white people are the reason why the AIDS rate is so high in the black community.

this is used to stir more hate

I don't think it's as much of a civil rights issue as it was 20 years ago. We have learned more about the disease and to my knowledge people with aids are not discriminated against.

Now the group of people that has the highest number of aids cases is not the fault of the diseas, but the fault of the people who continuously put themselves at risk

You've got some issues if that's the first place your mind goes.

Agreed. It's just a subtle message that AIDS is something that happens to you, not something you're a participant in contracting.

AIDS is terrible, and I have plenty of sympathy for even those who acquire it through irresponsible action. But it isn't a civil rights issue, it's a "be responsible and you can avoid it 99.9 percent of the time" issue.

To commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day (observed Jan. 20), AIDS Healthcare Foundation, is releasing a new national billboard awareness campaign headlined “AIDS is a Civil Rights Issue.”

Currently African Americans account for 44% of all people with HIV/AIDS in the United States, yet only account for 12% of the population. Latinos account for 21% of all new HIV infections nationwide, yet only represent 16% of the U.S. population.

Join AHF as we welcome the Reverend Al Sharpton, International HIV/AIDS Activist and local clergy leaders and politicians for a series of National interactive townhall discussions on what we can do to change AIDS together .

Dr king represented a people that were opposed by another. He fought for voting rights and equal treatment.

A disease is not a civil rights issue.

its a medical issue.

and to say AIDS is a civil rights issue, is flat out wrong

Well I guess that's the good part about sleeping with a fat chick, in that there is literally no chance you'd get AIDS.

The reason it is a civil rights issue is because there is discrimination surrounding the disease as evidenced by numerous responses here. As a nurse in the south when an HIV positive pt was admitted to our ICU it was. Ok on practice for people to over react eg. Double glove, respond slowly to codes, refuse to do dumb things like foley insertions. If healthcare were impeded based on race it would be a civil rights issue. That's how HIV qualifies.

Nah, because they'd shed the pounds quickly once they got HIV.

this is one of those scenarios where "discrimination" has a negative connotation but it shouldn't

again, this is discriminatory, but for good reason

would you have sex with an AIDS-positive man? if not, you're being discriminatory yourself

Would I have sex with him? No you idiot but is it fair that I don't do chest compressions because he has a disease? That is where the discrimination becomes problematic.

civil rights issue does not necessarily mean its a race thing.

People with AIDS are supposedly discriminated against in the job market and stuff like that. No one wants to hire someone with AIDS or let them rent their house/apartment.

It seems like you think civil rights = racial equality. They're two different concepts. Civil rights can have absolutely nothing to do with race.
