Sounded like the same lighter to me.

I'm sure he did

the pacing of the show just seems off to me

I haven't read any of the true detective threads. May I ask you guys one question and someone answer without bitching me out for being a dumbass?

Shoot. You may get bitched at but you will probably get at least one truthful answer.

the end of like the 2nd episode. The dude with the mask. Dafuq. Then the next episode just acts like it never happened. I am guessing I am mixed up with the time jumping around.

Honestly Just a preview of Reggie. Assuming that is Reggie and not a character that hasn't been introduced yet.

have you watched all of the episodes yet? it may not makes sense if you haven't. The brief shot of the man in the jock strap and gas mask carrying a machete is at the end of ep3 and is just a preview of an event that Cohle and Hart allude to in their interviews with Papania and Gilbough. It lets you know something is coming

"Maggie reveals Cohle's activities in 2002, when his relationship with Marty fractured and he quit the force."
We didn't see the end of Marty's 2012 interview yet, right? We know that Rust walked out, and now we are going to see Maggies POV. Just wondering if we get to see Marty and Maggie telling the same story with different POV which could be amusing.

Which part are you disputing?

Couple of possibilities:
-Rust shoots Marty's daughter-
• Rust Cohle is an anagram for "Cruel Shot"
• Foreshadowing - Dinner Table scene: Audrey asks if Rust has every shot someone?

The part where the director made a point to highlight the sound of the lighter that sets the fire.

2 guys from my hometown are in the show and they tried to ruin it for me. I'm sure I made a scene as I covered my ears and ran off yelling "LAHLAHLAHLAH"

Go back and watch the very first scene of episode 1. In film and television there's a phrase "Up nats full." Nats is short for natural sound, which is anything that's not a direct voice recording.
The director goes up nats full on the lighter flick before we ever see the flames. This is what I mean by highlighting the sound. The lighter is heard but never seen.
Then seconds later in the interrogation room, Rust holds up a lighter and shows it to the detectives who asked him not to smoke. Then he flicks it and it makes the same sound that we just heard in the cane field.

17 year old zippo. I lose them within 5 years. Totally unbelievable. That's Decateur level shite. Ties, shirts, and now lighters.

Every lighter in the world sounds roughly the same.
