I think it was 1 person. More than that you risk leaving evidence behind for the popo.

And I imagine it takes some skill not to leave footprints. The police combed through that whole cane field and I didn't hear anything about footprints being found.

Wrong. It is obviously Marty carrying a clothing bag with most of his shirts and ties. He burnt them in the cane fields and thus is the reason for wearing the same shirt and tie on multiple occasions.

I always took that to be a different location than the cane fields.
I haven't re-watched the scene recently, but could it be the area around the church with the murals?

Speaking of the cane field, the director made a point to highlight the sound of the lighter that sets the fire. Seconds later, Rust flicks his zippo to light a cig in the interrogation room.
