He put together a pretty good team at nevada with Fazekas, Kemp & Snyder somehow, that team was fun to watch. That was his first head coaching job, I think he was hungry plus he had been almost exclusively a west coast guy, meaning he had much better recruiting connections especially in California.

He just rode the shirt tails of what Mike Montgomery did at Stanford.....he really wasn't that successful there compared to his predecessor.

After that it's been a bloodbath as you well know

What happened at Nevada and Stanford?

Are you serious? One good year at Nevada. Then at Stanford he took over s program that was consistantly having 25 to 30 win seasons and made them mediocre very quick.

mark fox was a big help at nevada. those temas were actually really fun to watch. i remember them dumping michigan state out of the tournament and scoring like 90+ points.

he did okay at stanford, not as good as montgomery, and rode the lopez twins and that team to his next gig. just turned out to be a terrible fit at LSU, rubbed too many people the wrong way (though i don't really blame him for trying to keep certain figures at bay) his recruiting sucked, his in game coaching was awful outside of year 1 when he had an experienced team that was ready to roll.

i was hoping he would work out because it was an excellent hire on paper, but damn after a couple years it was clearly not going to work. that class of stringer, turner, derenbecker, etc was supposed to be the foundation. half of them transfer, dotson was never healthy or effective, malcolm white sucked. his system of one high ball screen, shufflecut just didn't set the guys up for success. thankfully they reeled in JOB and hickey but that's about all there was to write home about recruiting wise.

it's like he just forgot how to coach. i can't see him ever having success at tcu in that league.

Hickey turned out to be a diamond in the rough. He was an unknown during high school for whatever reason. How TJ pulled JOB to LSU, I'll never understand. I'm glad JOB is a Tiger but certainly he had offers from other legit programs.

I hate it because he is a nice guy, but he's going to be gone.

A lot of other programs that offered him started moving on to other prospects at the time.

His other offers were from Butler, coming off of at least one final 4 run, and Murray St, home state school in the midst of a nearly undefeated season at the time.

Sure he wasn't highly touted, but we got him from schools that thrive on consistent 4 year players.

His 2014 class is filled with a zero star PG and a zero star kid with no position listed.

I wish Trent was around 14 years ago when I played high school ball.

The 2 commits for 2014 are Chauncey Collins who is a 3 star guard from Oklahoma and Ryan Parker who is only listed as a basketball commit because he is also a football commit who wants to play basketball also.

Not exactly end of the bench guys

You have to score to win in college hoops, Trent believes in defense and his offense is too restrictive that's why big time recruits stay away. You can't win big games when you want to score in the 50's. At LSU it was like watching paint dry.

he also had interest from tennessee, south carolina, and xavier IIRC.

i think another thing with him was he didn't decide to go 100% basketball until his senior year. he was a pretty good football player as well.

I don't remember, but it's not like we just picked out some random kid and "oh wow, he's actually pretty good" like some people may think.

Trent Johnson ran our program into the ground, but he is owed at least a modicum of credit for getting Hickey. It was a good eval and we pulled him away from at least one program that looked better than us at the time.

absolutely, especially considering a constant hinderance during brady's tenure was lack of a true point. hickey has his limitations but is a good fit on this team.
