I've been charged. It definitely changes the hunt for sure.

That's because your archery skills rival those of the gods.

It's downright scary how much ground those bastards can cover in such a short time frame.

I have certainly witnessed injured hogs, either bow or firearm shot in the vitals charge the shooter.

Wow.

I too believe the likelihood of attack is improbably low and the number of hunters that claim to have been charged and/or attacked is greatly exaggerated.

That said, theres no denying it happens and when it does it can get ugly.

i'm generally in a tree when i shoot them, and never have they done anything but run away. I have shot a couple from the ground, with bow and rimfire, and they all did the same thing, run away. There is no doubt attacks happen, but it is rare enough that i do not worry about it, other than to consider the closest tree branch that i would need to grab. Pigs can't climb.

This.

I've had a couple start running towards me after I shot them, but the continued barrage of 223 made them either turn around and walk off to die or died while trotting towards me.

I read an article about a guy getting charged by a big hog and it got him on the ground. He stabbed it with his knife to get it off of him. The guy was cut up pretty bad and almost bled out.

I was about to bring up the carrying a sidearm in the woods thing but someone else did it for me.

But I still do all the time.

Yeah, I had one put me up a tree while cruising timber once. I think I just found a mentally retarded one. He walked around the base of the magnolia I had climbed (I got about 6' off the ground luckily) popping his jaw loudly. This went on for about a minute then he walked off.

A man I used to hunt with approached a wounded boar and the bastard jumped up and bit him on the calf as he ran away. Said he held on for a couple seconds then let go. Put a couple small holes in his boot and leg but luckily nothing worse.

That being said, walking around worrying about them getting after you is just plain silly. Mosquitos are more dangerous.

that jaw popping is common with dominant boars and sows protecting piglets.

agree

Cornered, wounded, or protecting piglets and it is another situation though.

FWIW the hog that got the guy in this story could have easily been a sow with piglets close.

I never carry a side arm while hunting. In fact. I've been in the woods since about 8am doing some post season scouting and wasn't armed at all. Don't see that changing much even after reading this article.

Crazy thing is that the boar in the article was somewhat small and likely didn't have much for cutters. Imagine I it would have been 100 heavier and sporting some serious meat hooks.

an uncle of mine has one nasty looking scar on his calf from an encounter with a boar. damn thing either bit or hooked him clean thru his calf. i'll try and get a pic in the next few days to post it.
any wild animal can be dangerous if cornered.
