Her Mom gave us 10, my parents gave us 10 and we put up 25ish.

NO Debt

Add that to what I paid for the engagement ring and the money board would have a stroke.

edt..the honeymoon to Maui is included in that total.

My upcoming wedding is the sum of all fears. Feel bad for her dad but he set the budget.

Cakes are ridiculous, just because it's labeled as a "wedding cake" it's 1.5k. It's absurd.

I got married a long time ago but my father in law covered the cost. We had 500 guests so I imagine it was a hefty bill. My parents covered the rehearsal dinner cost. That is the way it generally works here.

Ya, everything about a wedding is ridiculous. Band could play on Bourbon st. For 6 hours for $500. Play your wedding for 4 hours its $2,000.

It is very very rate that you see cakes go over $1,000. Most are $400-$600.
The reception facilities running $60 to $75 a head for an average place is the killer.

People in city pretty much all do this for traditional weddings when you go from a church to a reception all.

I'm not sure. I don't know if ours even was that much I just know that price was given at more than one place that my wife priced. I think ours was around 1k or so for ~200 people. (I didn't attend any of the cake planning meetings)

You are either missing part of the story or your cake came with gold sprinkles.
I guess if you went with one of those ladies who does the shite out of her house and makes one or two cakes a week, you might get charged that much.

I would easily elope or do it at a resort. Save yourself (or someone else) the money. It's not worth if just to have pictures to look at.

The hard part is getting the female out of the 'storybook wedding' mindset.

ways to cut costs for a wedding (I'm sure the OT will consider half of this trashy):

- have family cook the food instead of catering
- have family bake the cake
- use decorations from your house, family's homes, etc
- ask a local church if you can borrow their tables if needed
- make the invitations yourself
- rent a wedding dress
- limit the alcohol
- get a friend to play music or DJ

I'm sorry, but some of that sounds like a pretty shitty wedding reception.
