New starting lineup

I think cjj may have found his best starting 5. Coleman is not really a 2 guard but getting him and Martin on the floor at the same time puts your best 5 on the floor. The team is long and athletic and very tough defensively with that group.
Stringer had a nice game off the bench and hopefully Morgan will find his shot soon.

Honestly, Coleman has been LSU's most consistent 3 point shooter all year. I don't see why he can't play the 2 for us. I agree that having him on the court with Martin Mickey and JOB brings a lot of size and energy.
Malik just can't make a shot. At all. He's shooting 51% free throws, 45% two point shots and 24% threes. Those are all pretty bad.

Martin struggled earlier in the season playing the 3 but he had a great game last night.

I liked the new line-up last night. While at the two guard, Coleman's ball-handling was good against Kentucky. That's probably the biggest concern for him while at the other guard spot.
I thought Johnny Jones did a great job with line-ups & substitutions last night. Although it does help when everyone chips in with a handful of baskets

More importantly he may have found that this team plays a zone more effectively than man. This lineup also allows us to press a little more . Morgan and Quarterman need to be limited in minutes and play Stringer more against zone D.

I don't think this pushes LSU to play more zone than normal. The SEC is a guard oriented league and Kentucky had plenty of open shots from them. This game was different because we were focusing on stopping their post players.
This will likely be the only game we play a zone from start to finish, including our game at Kentucky later in the year.

Also, all told, we probably needed to go to man with 3 minutes remaining when they stopped threatening the block. Otherwise, Coach Jones pushed all the right buttons.

agree. When they needed three's we shoulda backed out of that zone, but I agree Coach caught Cal with his pants down with that zone.

Kentucky never really fed James Young. Sure Young got his shots, but he was hitting at a good clip. UK didn't keep going to him against our 2-3 zone. I think Coach Jones is happy to know he has that 2-3 zone in his back pocket. Sort of like the press.

I disagree, I see us playing it way more now than we did before. It's def a matchup thing but teams like Fla. Kent ,it's our only chance. It allows us to stop dribble penetration and keeps JOB and Mickey out of foul trouble. Two of our biggest nemesis this year. I thinks it'll help against most teams .We shall se

I think it was a lineup intended to matchup with kentucky's size. They may use it going forward, but i wouldnt be surprised if they didnt

It's good to hear that coach is adjusting and adapting as the team develops.

LSU still doesn't play great man-to-man defense. They allow guys to get far more penetration than they should. Martin is the biggest culprit because he is just flat out lazy for long stretches of the game. Coleman gets in good position, but then constantly loses it buy leaving his feet for seemingly no reason. LSU will always be a man-to-man team, but I can see CJJ going to zone more when teams are having success attacking the basket like Alabama did. LSU has the players to be a long team. Especially at home, make an opponents guards prove they can shoot over the top of the zone.

I think we'll see more zone over Jones' tenure. It's tough right now with two sub 6' guards who play extended minutes.
Not many teams do. Martin has been a disappointment defensively. Man-to-man is still our best option to defend opponents though.

quote:No, not really. Morgan has been somewhat of a non factor and will continue to be so. We just beat Kentucky with almost no help from him. Here is his stats for last night's game with Stringer's next to it. There are so many Andre haters out there who put out the fiction that Morgan needs to be playing instead of him.

Morgan Played 6 minutes Stringer played 22 minutes
Morgan 0-4 from the field 0-3 from 3
Stringer 3-4 from the field 3-4 from 3
Andre also plays much more consistent defense than Morgan. Yes he is short and they sometimes take advantage of that and Morgan is good on the offensive boards. But overall Stringer is the key to this team and not Morgan.

quote:False! Stringer has been our best 3 point shooter. Stats for the year so far are Stringer 39-96 .406 and Coleman 22-63 .349. Martin has shot fewer but is better percentage also at .367. Hickey is not far back at .333.

Morgan didn't even look like he was properly squared up on his 3s. Just not a good night for him. I hope he finds his offense soon.

I think Hickey/Coleman/Martin/Mickey/O'Bryant III has to be the starting 5 from here on out.
They bring a lot of length to the floor and everyone can play their spots at a high level.
Stringer is much more effective coming off the bench against some backups or tired legs. Quarterman is still learning the game is zero threat to score. Morgan grabs boards and plays tough but has just been miserable shooting the ball.
The only worry about starting those 5 and bringing the rest of the guys off the bench is Stringer is your only threat of scoring really...but he seems to get more open looks when going against some tired legs or backups than starting a game out.
