re: Obama: Extending Unemployment Benefits “Creates New Jobs”

I understand. You take money from people that work and give it to people that don't work. When the people that don't work spend the money, it creates jobs. If the people that work and no longer have that money to spend, it has no impact on jobs.

Consumer spending is not the root cause of jobs. Production is.
Quick, name a consumer good that can be consumed w/o first being produced.

By that rationale then why doesn't the federal government just give everyone a monthly stipend of $10k? Wouldn't that then create tons of new jobs?

The premise is that once basic needs are met, a higher fraction of additional income is saved instead of spent, thus not creating jobs.
There are a million arguments against unemployment benefits, but this ain't one of them.

How much demand was there for Nike shoes or iPods the year before they were created?

These "jobs" were already there before the person was unemployed. Doesn't take a genius to realize these consumers spent money when they had jobs, so what new jobs are actually created??

Well we keep extending unemployment benefits and the unemployment rate has gone down has it not?
I hear ya bro.
I think we need to quit encouraging people to look for jobs. If more just stayed home and quit looking, we could easily get the unemployment rate back down to where Bush had it.
In fact I think most of the problem is caused by Tea Party types, and conservative Republicans who are out of work and go out there and look for jobs. This is throwing the economy out of balance and the unemployment rate just won't go back down to normal levels.

A lot. You don't quite understand the concept, do you?

Why do we need to extend the unemployment benefits when the administration came out a couple months ago and claimed the unemployment rates are near pre-2007 levels?

I have a similar question because the administration is bragging that the economy is improving that that unemployment is down.
So, if all is well, why is this needed?

I haven't been watching the news much since this issue was brought up, but has anyone in DC or in the media asked this question repeatedly?

Harry Reid called it an emergency.

saving money helps create jobs and expand the economy by providing the means for investment in companies/production

What good does providing the means for investment in production do if the additional demand is not there?
There is plenty of money lying around waiting to be invested. It is waiting on demand.
