'Restaurant Impossible' films episode at B.R. pizzeria
Mama Della's N.Y. City Pizzeria will have a chance at redemption this week. The pizzeria and Italian restaurant located on Jefferson Highway near Essen Lane will be the subject of an episode of the Food Network reality show Restaurant Impossible. The show's crew is set to hit town and film the episode this week. Host/chef Robert Irvine and a number of volunteers will be giving the restaurant a two-day makeover Thursday and Friday. A grand re-opening will take place Friday night. The Mama Della's episode is slated to premiere this fall in the show's eighth season. Details on the episode premiere have not been announced. The reality show features Irvine helping fledgling restaurants across the country in less than 48 hours and with $10,000. This will be the show's first visit to Louisiana. Mama Della's opened in the former Schlotzsky's location at 8190 Jefferson Highway in February 2012. Owner Barry Kalt, a New York native, prides himself on quality ingredients and told 225 in August last year that he's enjoyed the culinary experience in Louisiana. "I've learned more about cooking since I've been in Louisiana," Kalt said. "Living here has been a great culinary ride for me and continues to be." —Matthew Sigur

I agree but it seems that place is always dead. I would think that is mostly due to location and lack of knowledge by people in BR (and the fact that most people in this area would rather pay substantially less for an inferior product). Not sure how RI will be able to rectify those issues. Maybe the publicity from this will result in a bump in business.

Isn't the dude that runs that place German? Maybe that's why they are not doing so well.
I mean isn't pizza Italian!

I hope so.

He's not like John Deangelo but I've heard him get a bit loud at the staff a couple times.
Wish we had Deangelo's back just for the sheer enjoyment of watching a train wreck.
And yes he does have a really good product. I think he needs to get the notice out but that little stretch of Jefferson struggles and I'm not sure why. But NY Bagel is legit.

How is that a bad location? Jefferson is one of the busiest streets in BR.

I think it has to do with the fact that the owner is a complete a-hole that is rude and belittles/yells at his employees in front of customers. I witnessed it and haven't returned since.

So how do we get invited to show up Thursday, eat and talk about how the food is shite and probably Asian farm raised then go back Friday and say how great it is and that I'll be bringing everyone including grandma in on a weekly basis?

I really can't stand the show. Irvine bothers me.

I love the pizza there. And the lack of business is quite possibly from a lack of knowledge.. But from what I'm reading in the comments section, many people have been turned off by the soup nazi type owner.
I don't mind that type of owner but I'm reading a looooooot of negative comments about his attitude.

Same here. I was planning on going tonight. Hopefully they aren't there yet.

I honestly could see him and Irvine getting into a fist fight. He's a giant a-hole who needs to get popped in the mouth.

This. And he won't let his employees do anything. He needs a manager, and to stay in the kitchen, far, far away from the customers. It'll be interesting to see what's done with that space.

This is not the first show in Louisiana. He did one on a place in Mandeville or Covington which specialized in seafood. He gave him a new recipe to boil crawfish but the guy went back to the way he was boiling them once Robert left. Don't remember the name of the place but it was in LA.

I go there once a week. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I don't mind the owner's gruffness at times but I can see how many do.
It takes a while at times. I think a lot of people don't expect that.

Barry's never been anything but polite to my wife and I, but then we love the pizza and we've never tried to sub anything on the menu. I hear that's a peeve of his. And I've seen his employees standing around looking pretty ineffectual while he tries to cook and run the register.
Tell you what though, if Irvine spits out that pizza, you know that show is just another manufactured reality joke.

It's in no man's land. It's a place you pass on your way to other places, not a place most people stop even remotely close too. This wouldn't be a problem if it was fine dining or well established and it was a sought out destination, but casual dining is casual. For example, I've eaten at places like Qdoba and Zoe's in nearby Town Center a few times. I would never have eaten at them if they were in the location of Mamma Della's even though that's on my way to Town Center.
