To All:

I'm 36 and just got married for the first time 2 weeks ago. My parents are wanting to purchase me and the wife an outdoor "grill" if you will and I am on here to solicit your advice / opinions on what to go with. Is the big green egg all its cracked up to be (no pun intended), a smoker a better choice or should we just go with a gas grill?? Thank y'all in advance.

really depends on what you want to do. If you want a versatile cooker that can smoke, grill, and bake get a BGE/Primo. If your only ever going to be grilling or only going to be smoking get a gas grill or a true offset smoker. Ceramics are a jack of all trades, master of none IMO. I have a BGE and love it

First, congratulations. Best wishes in your marriage.

Now to the matter at hand. I've had a lg BGE for about 2 years and love it. It's versatile, forgiving, and user-friendly.

One advantage an oval shape will have over a round shape is that for the same cooking area it will have a larger major dimension. May be minor but something to consider of you plan on smoking briskets.

I am 46. I have cooked on a wide variety of cookers over my years and I have enjoyed the Big Green Egg more than any other outdoor cooking grill/smoker etc. I cook on it at least one time per week.

There are many other komono/ceramic cookers, and I am sure they are just fine. I can only speak about the egg because that's the brand I have.

I've got a Weber gas grill, and a Weber Smokey Mountain. Love them both....but I wouldn't mind having a Big Green Egg...especially if someone was going to buy it for me.

I've got a Weber kettle, a Weber Smokey Mountain, a verticle offset smoker and an antique Japanese Kamado. Love them all and use them for different cooks. I started with the traditional weber kettle and have collected from there.
If you are just starting into the world of charcoal cooking and want the most versatile, get the Weber Kettle. If your parents want to drop a grand, get the BGE.
Do you know what their budget is?

ETA-sorry, not a question for you Kingwood

Going to depend on what you cook most. I'm always going to have a smoker and a gas grill. I'll probably also have a regular charcoal grill. Different tools for different types of cooking. If chicken breasts and steaks/chops are your thing, you are going to be better off with a basic gas grill. Long and slow cooks, you'll need some type of smoker. I've read you can do both on an Egg type.

I have a buddy that has a BGE, he loves it. Seems a bit overrated for the price from what I can see though. But, I haven't ever heard from anyone that has one say they didn't like it.

FWIW, I have a nice sized homed pit and an Orion cooker....I can pretty much cover all my outdoor cooking needs between those two.

I would go with a Kamado style grill because they are the most versatile grills on the market. I have a Kamado Joe, brother has the primo oval xl, brother in law has the bge and the all pretty much cook the same. The differences are price, shape, color, where its made, etc. Its 4000 year old technology so BGE didn't event anything, they just marketed it first.

Big Green Eggs are guaranteed for life but don't order one over the internet and have it shipped to you, it voids the warranty. It's best to buy one from a dealer or get a demo from an Eggfest.

Anyone have any preference of a BGE vs a Primo oval? I'll be getting one or the other soon and wanted to see if anyone has any preference one way or the other.

The Primo JR oval is wider than the BGE large, and a couple hundred cheaper. It's not as deep, but I think I like the wideness of the oval for ribs.

I just got a Primo XL. I went with it due to price and the long axis for cooking. I think all the major brands cook the same. I have other friends with Primos and my FIL has a BGE.

I got the kamado style cooker because it was time to replace my gas grill and my upright gas water smoker. I think the Prmio XL will replace both.

Pick the one you like. Good luck.

ETA: Congrats on the nuptials.

Buying yourself, get a Chargriller Akorn. As a gift from your new in laws, accept the BGE.

I gave my BGE to my brother and got a Primo Oval XL. They are both great cookers with similar features. I upgraded for the larger capacity and the ability to put a divider in the charcoal box to have direct and indirect zones. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either brand.
