no I can't.
there is something in his personality....
in the last couple of minutes he makes bad decisions in close games when playing strong teams
at TN, if you look at the SEASONS, he was not bad, it was the horrendous losses that got him fired/forced him to quit, you pick it.

Lsu posters act like Lsu's defense is bottom of the barrel. We aren't as good as we usually are but we are 4th in the sec in total defense.

Saban has done the same. The best DCs in the NFL have done the same.

Lane brought his Daddy in, that's why he was available for LSU. He wasn't fired for performance. I'm not sure why you have fixed it in your mind that he was.

Chavis is great when he has 8 NFL 1st and 2nd rounders on the field and three or four 4th rounders coming off the bench. Otherwise he gets PWND
You're stupid. I guess everyone is forgetting that we shut down JManziel last year while he made bama look stupid. Chavis is a top 5 dc and a case can be made for #1.

I certainly have not said that, nor have I called for Chavis to be fired , or .....
but he certainly has the tendency to to play TO NOT LOSE instead of to win at the end of a game.
I also do not think he is a aggressive in his play calling as some make him out to be.
If he has aggressive players, he appears to be so.
He shows aggressiveness occasionally on first downs, his problems come in 3rd downs but also at the end of a game.... his lack of aggressiveness has allowed good QBs to march down the field on us.

his views and play calling got him fired at TN.
um, that is just flat out wrong
Fulmer was fired. Kiffin wanted only his guys and brought along his father who was a super bowl winning DC. No one on the entire UT staff was retained. Putting that on Chavis is just ignorant.

True. Should not have said gameplan. They knew how to attack, knew our weakness and went after it. Successfully. Made it look easy.
I "kept saying it" because no one commented and everyone acts like it is new.
And duderino your thread is about criticism not calling for firing so go frick yourself.

Sure - any coach who's coached long enough will have some skeletons in their closet. We're familiar with Saban's (Arky '02, UGA '04, Iowa '04, Utah '08, etc.). We're also familiar with Chief's.
Chavis is a very good DC. But his approach at the end of halves is flawed. It simply comes down to this:
- There have been numerous occasions where if our D could just get a stop on their last possession we would win. We can reel-off a half dozen instances of the sort.
- Conversely, I am not aware of a single instance where we stopped a good team in a one-score context to preserve victory. The closest I can think of would be Arky and AU last year.
- Does it really take experienced, NFL-caliber talent all over the field for him to field a dominant D?
- So we're top-25 at present: does anyone really think there are 25 other teams with better talent on D than us? IMO, there aren't even 5 teams with better talent. If thought otherwise, name 'em.

I'm not even an LSU guy, but I can name Carolina and TX A&M in addition to the 2 you listed last season. But in the mind of the pesi-fan, you have to go back and have someone link a YouTube video to even remember those while the Alabama game is seared in your collective conscience.

He had the #3 Total Defense in 2008 with only 3 NFL guys (one was a freshman).

Alabama, UF, South Carolina alone in the conference have better talent.

Nice addition. There's what 2 or 3 Seniors getting solid playing time on defense? Of course there won't likely be more than 2 go after this season. Although the biggest obvious answer is not one of the Seniors. (Freak)
And what I meant was are there any players who are playing at an NFL level this season. I don't care whether they are freshmen or seniors. All I was saying was the non-seniors will have another season to get better and they may have a shot at it but not based on how they are playing this season.

Both of these were two score contexts. And they both scored on their last possession. We had to recover onside kicks to preserve victory.

According to this site Tenn was 11th in total D in '08: Yahoo Sports NCAA '08 Def Stats. Nonetheless, that seems to be the exception.

UF - yes
Bama - marginal
USCe - no
BTW, no need to misunderstand my complaint. I don't think Chief ought to be fired. He's a very good DC. We nearly stoned Oregon in '11 and A&M in '12. But his end of half/game approach is flawed. If the game is on the line, far more times than not, we lose.

They got the ball with down by one score or less with time on the clock. South Carolina only needed a FG. You guys knocked the white WR from A&M out and got an INT against Carolina.

Official NCAA Stats
It's also the exception for most everyone. Great DCs develop talent and put players in the NFL in addition to having good statisitical success. Ex: Saban.

All three of those will have more NFL guys, FSU will as well. There are few others as well. You guys don't have an NFL DL outside of Ferguson, none of the LBs are NFL types, if any of the secondary guys end up at the next level, it will probably one of the freshmen corners.

Bottom line is this. Is Chavis a good coach? The answer is absolutely yes. Does he have talent on defense? Again, the answer is yes. Is that talent incredibly young and inexperienced? The answer is again, yes. Is Chavis putting these young guys on D in the best position to be successful? In my opinion no he is not. However, I have faith in our staff. If we would have Kevin Minter and Eric Reid, I think this season would look completely different.
With that being said we don't have these guys. Chavis will do what he thinks is best for this team. Just because he has a bunch of BOYS playing for him doesn't mean he shoul be fired. I believe a bye week will do wonders for this young defense.
Everybody on the rant needs to calm down, eat some fruit or something.

Fair enough. Maybe I should have qualified my assertion with "meaningful."
USCe got the ball on their 20 with 1:05 on the clock and no TO. The int was on the last play from their 32. LSU-USCe '12 Box Score
Vs A&M, they got the ball back on their 18 with 10s and no TOs. LSU-A&M '12 Box Score
IMO, I don't think most fans would celebrate either as accomplishments of note. On the other hand, we wonder how we can stop other teams almost all game only to collapse at the end?
As for "total D" - again fair enough. One site sorted on total tds, the other on pts allowed.
Again, '08 is the exception with Chavis's career. Else, his would never be ranked lower with better talent.

Success at the next level is only one criterion. Tebow was as good in CFB as anyone but has had only ltd success in the NFL. That said, it's not at all unreasonable to think that all our DL and DB's will play some on Sunday's. Agree with you on the LBs. If recruiting ratings mean anything, it's unlikely that there are 6 teams with better talent on D much less 25. We should be better than 25.
