The number of people who complain about how terrible the characters on Girls are yet have never voiced the same complaint about the characters of Breaking Bad is remarkable.
I must have missed critics and fans of Breaking Bad portraying it as a smartly written, groundbreaking show that accurately reflects a generational experience. Sorry about that.

walter white had a lot of characterization during that show. go watch episode one and the first half of the last season and tell me that there is no difference. jesse was hystrionic at times, but had ebbs and flows. skylar, too.
hank, flynn, marie, and some others (HUELLLL) didn't really do much...but don't claim there was no characterization in BB
plus, when Girls ran out of material last year and they basically just made Hannah completely psychotic overnight, they jumped the shark. this was like the 18th episode of the series, and they were already jumping the shark. that's what you call amazing writing

You didn't hear that Breaking Bad defines and accurately portrays the meth dealers of this generation? Breaking Bad gave Meth Dealers a voice in a world that largely ignores their point of view.

Never did.
Here are some comments from this thread

But every person on the show a a piece of shite.

But there is not a single likable character
quote:
Hard for me not to find something redeemable in a character, but these whiny girls make it easy.
quote:
None of the characters really have any redeeming value
quote:
And none of the other characters are even in the slightest bit redeeming.
The show is about post college, early 20 somethings. Of course they are self absorbed and dumb. That doesn't mean they are irredeemable. How many people aren't self absorbed and dumb at that time in their life?
Just funny to me that so many think of these characters as awful, but didn't see much of that critique during the BB bonanza. shite, there was even a Team Todd movement.

Breaking Bad is about Meth Dealers. I would kind of expect that they aren't going to be particularly likable characters. Not to mention that Breaking Bad wasn't billed as a comedy with Jud Apatow involved in the show.
The Wire didn't have any likable characters in it either but it was about crack and heroin dealers in Baltimore. That was kind of the point.
I guess with Girls the hype made me think it was going to be something that it clearly was not.

John Daly with makeup on would be more attractive than her.

This show gets tons of MTV board hate but I enjoy it. The first season was much better than the second so I'm interested to see what season 3 brings.

well hannah is irredeemable
so to make her even more crazy, they literally OUT OF NOWHERE made her fricking crazy
there are good people who are 20 somethings (just like there are black people, even though this show acts like there aren't)

BB wasn't hailed for its realism or how it defined a generation. it was a crime thriller that required a suspension of disbelief. girls is supposed to be a show that requires no SoD, at least if you belief the hype
show me where BB was hailed for its realism

No. The Wire had morally ambiguous characters and that is a huge reason why it was the GOAT.

Walker White and Jesse Pinkman (the two main characters definitely have redeeming qualities in that, walter originally had good intentions. We can relate to the fact that he started something thinking he was doing it for one reason and realizing he was doing it for the self-satisfaction. If anyone on this board says they havent done something like that or felt that way then they are liars)

Ha. I really liked the episode where she shacked up in the guy's house for a couple days of sex and housewifery.
Jessa is the only one that I find truly tedious. The rest can be annoying, but I enjoy watching them attempt, and often fail, to be "real" people

Those last two episodes were uncomfortable to say the least.

No doubt. But if we're being honest, most of us were not particularly great people at that age.
The black people thing is nitpicking to me. We can go round and round on all sorts of shows that don't display racial or gender reality.

I think the realism quote is misconstrued a bit. I would say it gives a semi realistic view (it's still a tv show, not a documentary, of course) of life for college educated, privileged, urban 20 somethings from the perspective of women; that is something we have never had on tv. It is much more realistic in it's depictions and emotions of sex and relationships than we saw in SATC.
Is it a perfect show? Not at all. Did the internet internet when hyping the show? Of course. It's not a generation defining show, but it is an interesting show that should be judged on its merits, not what bloggers decided to say in the run up to the airing of the show. shite, people thought Smash would be a huge hit after screening the pilot.
quote:
show me where BB was hailed for its realism
For me, that doesn't have anything to do with characters being redeemable or not. No matter how fantastic or realistic their world is intended to be, their reactions to their environments are truth. Those actions, reactions, and motives can be judged to determine how we feel about them.

Re: the lack of black people in the show, Lena Dunham said the show is based on her own experiences. She grew half-Jew, half-WASP, and didn't have many experiences with black people, so, according to her, she didn't want to write a stereotypical, token black character into the show just for diversity purposes.
Posted on 10/16/13 at 6:58 pm to TotesMcGotes
I gave the show a chance but didn't really understand or like it. Nudity is okay and I'm cool that she's cool with getting naked but it's become a sideshow in itself. I dislike the characters, no matter how realistic a portrayal it may be or not be. I have friends that love the fact that they can relate to her character because she's "in her twenties and will figure it out one day." bullshite. It's called hard work.
