It is safer at 8-9, as I'm going through it right now. I'd actually rather him not play, but he loves it. I mentioned that I might take it away and the dude was extremely upset. He's a good kid so I let him do what he loves to do.

But.....there's concussion protocol even for this level. I've seen multiple kids this year get concussions. My boy has a friend who's had two already (one last yr and this yr). I hear it all around the fields of kids 6-7 etc... getting the concussions. Probably isn't worth it. I'm definitely torn.

I have a daughter, so I have bigger things to worry about than football. Like gun ownership and learning how to clean a gun on my front porch and wearing NRA t-shirts and talking like Clint Eastwood.

Although, I did get a call today from school that my daughter was running on the playground and ran into a pole. So, maybe she's got the drain bamage already.

I started at 5

The injury risks of young kids is very very low (ages 5-12)

In actuality while you think the hits are not that violent in the younger ages you are not accounting for the fact that their brains are more fragile at that age and it takes less impact to incur an injury than what you think.

I do agree that puberty years will be the most dangerous since you will have potential of kids being at different stages.

This is my general idea, you ask an 8 or 9 year old and they will just respond yes or no based on if they feel like doing it. At 12-13 you can at least have some type of discussion about it.

I recognize that injuries are lower the younger they are as I never had any major injuries and never did until 2 concussions in HS, but I feel like common sense tells me that concussions are serious business as an adult so it must be just as bad if not worse for children.

No father should ever have to write a sentence that includes the words daughter and pole.

I'd let my daughters wrestle Andy Kaufman.

It would scare me to death to have my kid learning the art of tackling and contact at age 13. Kids can get hurt at 13. I want my kids to learn how to protect themselves before live bullets are flying so to speak.

I couldn't find the Patriots one or the Bears one. I'd appreciate if some one knows where they're at. Till then I'm happy killing dolphins.

some of your are such pussies. No kid is gonna get a concussion playing football until they are playing around 12-13 and above. i never got a concussion and was playing from 6-13, the only time i got a concussion was falling and smacking my head on the gym floor(12) and getting knocked onto black top in cabage ball trying to catch a pop-up. Your 6 year old is not gonna have permanent brain damage from playing football vs other 6 year olds.

Well I would imagine Drew's kids will be playing QB if they play so yes they would get more experience throwing playing 7 on 7 flag anyway. So we are kind of talking about 2 different things here. Learning proper way to tackle versus what his kids will probably be doing.

I started way early as well. Like Pee Wee. Never a problem. I didn't get my bell rung until about 8th grade in practice. That was the only time I can remember any sort of excruciating pain.

This. ^

Once a kid is over a certain weight they can't advance the football. They'll have a big X on they're helmet. That way some 100 lb. kid doesn’t truck a 50 lb. kid. The "Heads up" program teaches kids how to hit/tackle properly. Teach them early, don't wait till they're 12-13 y/o. At that point they'll be so far behind some of the other players and then, they may not want to play at all.
