Top Chef New Orleans-Anyone Watching?****SPOILERS*****

The New Orleans chefs aren't doing a very good job representing. It's strange. First two shows involved local ingredients. They didn't even get accolades for gumbo. In fact, the Galatoire's chef got criticism. The other chefs made some bizarre things they called gumbo that couldn't have been further from the dish and one of those won.
First season I've watched this show.

Not yet.
All of these shows have a "producer input" component I've heard/read/assumed.

Makes me question if Ms. Chase really knows her gumbo?

They called it a gumbo challenge but they really asked them to make a stew and put their own spin on it by showing their personal culinary roots.

I havent watched last nights episode but going into the season I wasn't expecting much for the Galatoire's chef. And I had only slightly higher expectations for the LPG chef with my experiences at both restaurants.

I can't stand the Galatoire's chef. He's annoying and one of the least talented chefs there.
I thought LPG's chef did fine with the gumbo and food truck challenge.
I wanted to try the "Moroccan" gumbo, it looked amazing.

Sichel is actually a really talented chef. When he was cooking at 7 on Fulton, he was putting out some of the best food in New Orleans. And yes they are painting him as the cocky, swashbuckler, but that is TV production (to some degree).

The Katrina component was so contrived and obnoxious.

No kidding. So far, I cringe when he speaks. I'm embarrassed for him when he speaks. Justin hasn't been cocky, but rather unimpressive. Overall, in a city with chefs from two well known restaurants and, particularly Galatoire's, it's not a favorable view of New Orleans foods.
I haven't enjoyed the show as much, overall, as I do other shows regardless of the New Orleans aspect. It appears more contrived.

I DVR'd it and saw the quick fire, but will watch the rest later. Most of that stuff wasn't gumbo!
How did I miss the first episode? Or have I missed two?

No, last night was episode 2.

If this is what the state spent some of the BP money on, its wasted. This is doing nothing to show off the true culinary genius of NO restaurants. Just contrived reality tv nonsense.

I'm not sure this was the best way to spend government money. Not sure the actual $ amount though.

I think the secret is largely out. It's not like it's entirely NOLA chef's, it's only 2. I'm not certain the benefit of the show is to highlight our chef's as opposed to our city in general.

Well, reminding people of Katrina doesn't exactly encourage them to make vacation plans to come here during the season. I have a client who won't schedule a conference in Nola for that very reason. Won't take the risk.
Darla, I missed the first episode, but found a repeat and taped that. Then, I set it up for taping the season.
The gumbo challenge was most disappointing if you ask me, but no one's asking.

Ehh, I wouldn't worry too much about the ROI on that spend. Two bones to pick with show: Think it is fairly stupid they made chefs from New Orleans prove they could be on the show, but let some clown on who pre rolled sushi and didnt realize it would not be a good idea.
2) The Katrina focus would have been great 4 years ago. We just hosted a Super Bowl, if some mouthbreather still thinks New Orleans is underwater, I'd say we dont want his/her business.

I had a feeling a few people would end up complaining about its authenticity
It's contrived? Well no shite. Every episode in the history of top chef has been. They have to plan stuff out. They can't just pop up on Jackson avenue on Fat Tuesday & have a spontaneous soul food cookoff while Zulu is rolling by.
It's not a small crew like when Bourdain visited and everyone was sucking his balls about the hole in the walls he visited.
Top chef is a large production. It has to be contrived. If it means throwing a fake party on the side of the bayou, or not even shopping at the whole food in New Orleans, or playing the Katrina card, then so be it. There are some limitations here, and a ton of planning.

The galatoire's chef is disappointing. Especially since he couldn't get approval from Leah chase for his gumbo.
