There is a great book by Gary Joiner called Lost Shreveport and one of the chapters is about brewing. We all know that prohibition was enacted nationally in 1921, but local governments were allowed to do whatever they wanted from the beginning. Well due to the river and the rail lines we had at the time, Shreveport had a ton of breweries and by all accounts we were poised to become the Milwaukee of the south.
well the teetotalers and religious nuts got a prohibition movement going and when it went to the ballot, they stuffed the ballot boxes in the rural areas of the parish and outlawed alcohol in Caddo Parish around 1908. It killed the chance of Shreveport really being a big deal and having an economic future. These two new breweries are the first ones since then to start to reclaim some local pride. I, too, am excited about it.

Haven't had a brewery in over 100 years, then we have 2 open within a month of each other
can't wait!
Haven't had anything by Red River, but I've had the Great Raft pale ale, schwarbier, and amber. Their pale ale was legit.

it also has a extensive chapter on the trolley system we used to have, it went tons of places you'd be surprised (and I don't have it on me or I'd be more specific, sorry). In fact, in case you're in a trivia contest one day, the first city rail system wasn't steam powered, it was mule-driven.
sorry none of this is about Olive St., ha.

It's back. I went right after the change and it was terrible. Tried again last week and everything was back to snuff. Thank God.

That is a good book. I read through it at Barnes and Noble. Shreveport had a red light district.

I prefer Texas St. Tavern for a steak in SBC.
Taking the lady there tonight for her birthday. I have been meaning to try it out and see how it compares to Silver Star and Saltgrass.

I had never heard about the brewery history in Shreveport. Google books has a few pages in a book preview. I was just reading portions of it.
Its interesting to think about what might have been with Shreveport. I've heard that with Shreveport's early roots in country music (LA Hayride) that Shreveport could have been what Nashville is to country music today. Also, had the breweries not been killed by prohibition...Shreveport could have been a city with a lot more culture than what it is today.

Arrest made for arson per KSLA
quote:
Shreveport fire investigators have made an arrest in the arson of the Olive Street Bistro. According to a statement released Monday evening, Shreveport Fire investigators and the local office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms have obtained and executed an arrest warrant for Carl R. Dollar, a 27-year-old white male, of the 100 block of E. Topeka Street. Dollar, former manager of Olive Street Bistro, was arrested at approximately 5:00 p.m. in the 2200 block of Fairfield Avenue. According to Investigator Chris Robinson, "On September 30, 2013, in the 000 block of Olive Street, Carl R.Dollar allegedly committed the crime of Simple Arson when he intentionally set fire to the property of another without the consent of the owner, R.S. 14:51, thus causing more than $1 million in damage."

Just read that as well, kinda figures. Now the big question is, is there another person involved?
