Is the SI slow drip backfiring?

Do they not realize that America now has the attention span of a candy crush stage? I think they believed the slow drip of information would result in an ever-increasing sense of shock and disbelief and a public outcry for a full blown investigation. Instead, they've gotten "yeah, yeah....we get it. Teams cheat and it looks like that happened 10 years ago".
There's a reason why mini-series don't appear on television any more.
Yahoo's reporting on the other hand in designed for today's reader. "Here it all is with proof. Come at me bro!" Much more effective.

A. It happened a decade ago
B. so far it's just been typical stuff and nothing really shocking. Yet they played it up like it was Penn st. volume 2

I agree. SI is acting like they have the discovery of the century and that we're all waiting with bated breath for the next release.

Evans' editor is a bigger idiot than he is. I'd love to know how they convinced their bosses to do this five part deal with nothing but circumstantial bullshite.
The fact that you now have their competitors coming out and laughing at the story is very telling. Most of the time, everyone piles on stuff like this. That should tell you how pathetic of an attempt this is.

I don't know if the reaction is a commentary on the audience's attention span. Scandals can persist past the point of new information, and we still love it. This story is just a lot less interesting than they anticipated.

Yep. And the fact that a lot of people have come out and debunked what the author has to say before the rest of it is released.

The Hatfields & McCoys mini-series last year was the tits.

The entire SI mess is falling apart or more accurately, being quickly dismantled by people a little closer to being real journalist. If they have any shame or pride whatsoever they would cancel the last 2 installments, retract the story and discipline the authors. I won't hold my breath.

It's not the slow drip that's a problem. It's the quality of reporting. The Tulsa Daily is gleefully ripping this thing to shreds, and now ESPN is in on the act. It took their reporters one f'n day to find more evidence than SI did in ten months. That's just damning to SI's quality of work.

This.
The problem with the story is that there is nothing revealing, shocking or eye-opening. Even the most casual of college football fans is left thinking "how is any of this different from what was going on in the 70's, 80's or 90's?" In fact, college football is probably cleaner and on a more level playing field now than at any point in the past 40+ years.

They spaced it out b/c the story sucks and it would help them get more clicks.

Tomorrow they will recapture the nation's attention with the groundbreaking news that college football players get laid.

a lot (probably most) people don't realize this. hell, when it looked like you were going to be good, your next trip was to the auto dealer. players then never payed for clothes, food, drinks, etc and alums gave them the $100 handshake all the time not to mention cush summer jobs where you didn't hve to show up very often (like class). i was in one class with pistol pete (the actually called roll) and he didn't show up one time all year. of course there was always a muffled "here" from someone in the back. the ncaa is not perfect but they have damn near an impossible job. all these young people stating they should be dismantled is like saying the police force should be dismantled because you hate cops and they have picky laws.
