What's backfiring on them is not the method they are using to release the "report", it's the fact that the whole "report" is complete bullshite.

I'm pretty sure 95% of their subscriptions these days are doctors' offices.

all it took was one phone call to the OSU registrars office to find out that one of the people "involved" that claimed he had two degrees, didn't have ANY degrees.

seriously. one phone call.

SI is a joke.

The slow drip is allowing scrutiny after each step. Even ESPN has caught on now. The next installment may not even get noticed. This could be a death knell for SI.

I'm waiting for T Boone to turn his lawyers loose.

9 of the players interviewed about drugs were kicked off the team for drug use. That's really pathetic reporting.

There's a reason they made sure not to accuse him of anything.

Probably didn't help that Yahoo released a more appealing report, with actual evidence, against the team that won the Natty 3 of the last 4 years.

Slow drip keeps them relevant in a world where no one buys magazines anymore, relevant for 15 minutes

That's just damning to SI's quality of work.
Deadspin made literally a single phone call to the Sociology Dept head and shot the academic fraud angle of the story full of holes.

For some reason the Yahoo story isn't get near the attention it deserves over the crappy hack job SI story bashing OSU and Miles. Defamation lawsuits should be pursued.

It isn't backfiring. The very fact that you are asking the question indicates that you are following the story. If they had put it all out at once we would be largely finished talking about it. But since they are releasing it bit by bit, we have new stuff to talk about every day for the last week. When was the last time you recall anyone talking this much about an article in Sports Illustrated? I can't recall people ever talking about an SI article this much. SI's goal is to sell magazines and generate traffic to their website. And it is working. They could give a shite less if the article is shitty journalism.

Tomorrow they will recapture the nation's attention with the groundbreaking news that college football players get laid.

Unless they have video of Miles cuffing some sluts to a rusty iron bed and hooking them up to heroin drips for potential players to nail, this segment is going to be fricking awesome
