Him moving to the mls would be really surprising for me as well. Why would he not just stay in the epl and move to an upper middle team and play consistently against the best in the world?

I don't really think a year in the mls will diminish his abilities come WC time. I think it's more important he get steady playing time, he'll still get to play elite competition in our friendlies during the buildup to the WC.
Maybe just wants to be back in the US. Even though Seattle isn't Texas, it'll be a lot easier for him to visit in between games or have friends and family visit him that when he was in London. Not to mention he'll have a much longer off season

IMHO this move would suck dick for a couple of reasons.

The only thing I can come with is that he must really dislike living abroad. It was always his dream to play and England so of all people I'm surprised he's coming back.

Wow, didn't actually see this happenin at all, suprising and dissapointing to me. With this being a workd cup year, but maybe him being their star player will somehow improve his game...
Trying to look on the bright side

Really am shocked by this. He's been saying nothing but champions league aspirations for the past year and a half and now he jumps back to MLS? He must be homesick, or maybe he's losing his passion for the game and wants to make things fun again.. Idk, this is puzzling to say the least.

I agree. This move doesn't have any bearing on the WC IMO, unless being teammates with Clint elevates EJ's game. I feel like he (EJ) still has another level to which he can take his game.
Dempsey is at his ceiling.

Maybe he realizes "Champions League" is kind of an arbitrary goal. It's not his fault the Spurs didn't get there. Not his fault that he scored 20 goals on a team that would have made CL from a lower level league but didn't in the EPL.
The point being I think the whole Champion's League thing is and should be more about the level at which you are playing than it is about reaching and possibly losing out in the early round of a tournament. Outside of a couple of teams from each big league, high-level EPL is as high a level as one can play at, and Dempsey proved he could more than hold his own there.

Maybe he thinks this is a good opportunity to bring some notoriety to the league that gave him his start and helped him realize his dream.

MLS hasn't hurt Donovan for the USMNT so far...

People are overreacting. The guy is 30 and wants to come home to play with his friends.

He probably had big time CL in mind. Didn't get it. Doesn't think he'll get it.
Nothing wrong with going back home.

Hmm, good train of thought, I could see this being a legit reason. He went to Europe, made a top 5 club and showed he belongs, never having to wonder "what if". :cough: donovan.

I think Donovan is cool with his decision.

Well when Clint was talking about the Champions League he must have been talking about the one in CONCACAF
