Robert Royal (TE): 18, 224, 1
QB Rohan Davey: 217-367, 59%, 3347 yds (23rd all-time in SEC history), 18 TDs, 10 INTs
#5. 1983:
Eric Martin: 52 receptions, 1,064 yds, 5 TDs
Mitchell Andrews (TE): 26, 377, 1
Herman Fontenot: 22, 330
(Dalton / James combined for over 500 yds receiving)
QB Jeff Wickersham (193-337, 57%, 7 TDs, 17 INTs, dude threw some INTs huh? 25 TDs to 39 INTs in career)
#6. 1971:
Andy Hamilton: 45 receptions, 854 yds, 9 TDs (career 19.64 ypc ranks 3rd in SEC history)
Ken Kavanaugh (TE): 18, 223, 4
Keigley, LeDoux, Fakier: 300 yds, 3 TDs combined
QB Bert Jones: 66-119, 55%, 945, 9 TDs, 4 INTs
QB Paul Lyons: 57-122, 47%, 817, 11 TDs, 7 INTs
#7. 1989:
Tony Moss: 59 receptions, 934 yds, 9 TDs
Todd Kinchen: 25, 396, 2
Alvin Lee: 23, 362, 1

Eddie Fuller (RB): 38, 477, 9
QB Tommy Hodson: 183-317, 58%, 2655 yds, 22 TDs, 12 INTs
#8. '07:
Early Doucet: 57, 525, 5
Brandon LaFell: 50, 656, 4
Demetrius Byrd: 35, 621, 7
Richard Dickson (TE) 32, 375, 5
QB Matt Flynn: 202-359, 56%, 2407, 21 TDs, 11 INTs
#9. 1993:
Brett Bech: 30 receptions, 429 yds, 3 TDs
Eddie Kennison: 28, 466, 3
Scott Ray: 25, 366, 1
Sheddrick Wilson: 15, 182
QB: Jamie Howard: 106-248, 43%, 1319 yds, 7 TDs, 12 INTs
Things that stick out:
Why was Bert Jones splitting time at QB in '70, '71?
LSU has a proud passing history, but the INT has always been our nemesis as Wickersham, Howard, and Booty all finished with more INTs than TDs. Chad Loup: 12 TDs, 12 INTs. (Lee, somehow, didn't, finishing with 31 TDs to 21 INTs).
Related note: Jamie Howard did less with more than any QB in LSU history. In '94, they still had Bech, Wilson, Kennison, and added TE David LaFleur.
Matt Mauck deserves to be on any best QB list for LSU with his high '03 completion percentage and great career TD-INT ratio (37-18).
I always figured Hodson slumped in '89, but I've come to realize it was our defense that was the problem.
Andy Hamilton could prob play in today's game as I've seen his quickness and he was 6'3", but never made in it NFL (injuries?). I can't really speak for any WRs before '70.. who am I missing?
No great corps since '07. '08 was fine with LaFell, Byrd, Tolliver, but last year may have been our worst WR corps since 1999. If Landry or Beckham ever become All-SEC it won't look that way, but it was our 1st year since the 90's that we didn't have a Star, #1 guy (even Jerel Myers in '99 and Foster/Booty in '98 had better stats), which may mean you'd have to go back to '97 to find a receiving corps that wasn't better than last year's.

Nice list. Wendell Davis was almost a one man Receiving Corps
My favorite has to be 2003
Josh Reed

That 2006 squad might be one of the most underrated teams in the modern era of CFB.

I know it was top heavy, but your #4 crushed everyone else in total yards.

I love lists like this b/c people like you actually followed LSU football before we were viewed as a truly successful program
With that said, 01 and 03 - especially with Devery was an exciting time![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Icongeauxtigers.png)

Good list.
I'd put 2001 & 2003 ahead of 1987.
Don't mean to nitpick, but I notice you left Richard Dickson out of the 2007 group (32, 375, 5).

Great post filled with interesting stats. After reading about Lee's 31 TD to 21 INT ratio, I went back and isolated his statistics after his freshman year:
18 TDs
5 INTs
174/296
2076 yards
Very solid TD to INT ratio. I don't think LSU has ever had a QB show as much statistical improvement as Lee did after his freshman year.

Wendell Davis was a stud back then.

You're missing 1987 total yards for Hodson.

2 things:
Josh Reed was the best WR in LSU history. He was uncoverable. Only lacked top end speed. Set the regular season receiving record for all major conferences at a school that isn't historically pass happy. The 2001 corps was the best ever because Josh reed was so good and he had a first round pick across from him.
Jarret Lee had more TD passes as a frosh than any other LSU great? wow.

Why was Bert Jones splitting time at QB in '70, '71?
He possessed as strong an arm as any quarterback in college football history and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting in 1972. As a 1972 All-American, he was the first player taken in the 1973 draft (Baltimore)
Jones didn't like the dual quarterback system at LSU because he only got to play half as much.
Question: How did you like the two-quarterback system at LSU and the coaching staff?
Answer: "The LSU coaching staff was old school and not very smart at either understanding or adapting.
"LSU was playing two quarterbacks all the time, primarily a run-option type quarterback. That just wasn't conducive to my style. They did some things that were not copacetic. They told me that I would be calling the plays, and then I didn't but that wasn't any big deal. I played only half the time while i was at LSU.
Q: What was their logic there? Were you just shuttling in plays from the bench?
A: "No, you'd go in for a series, and then come out for one or two, and then go back in. It was a weird deal. I may have one NCAA record. I'm the opnly quarterback in the history of 1A college football who only played half the time and was second string, who made consenus All-Anerican, and who was a first-round NFL draft choice. We had one quarerback who could throw the ball and one qarterback who could run. So, they threw the guy who ran and ran the guy who threw,"
Q: What kind of seasons did you team have?
A: "We were very successful, and we were probably ranked in the top 10 during my three years."
