There will always be a market for consoles. Not everyone is going to want to game on PC or else they would have jumped already.
The first console to get the Steam model up and running wins the "war"

Just a battle. All would eventually adopt. They would then provide alternate services to prove their superiority.

Everyone in this scenario makes more mony except for the trade in shops but they aren't out 100% because MS is still accounting for them.
Yeah but I'm having troubles figuring out if it's for the good of the industry or for the good of their income statement.

The more I hear about it, the more Xbox One makes sense. I'm still leaning PS4 due to price and a few other reasons, but it's not so black and white anymore. Microsoft needs to fire their entire PR dept. because they failed miserably.

Curious... What are the other reasons ?
The $100 IMO, shouldn't even be a consideration on something that is going to be in use for 6+ years.

Why can't it be both?
If they make more money and you save more money, does it really matter if Gamestop no longer has a brick and mortar store to go get screwed on trade ins at?

You're right. Getting there first means nothing says Apple, Windows, the US Military, etc

You deal in a lot of absolutes. Only a sith deals in absolutes.

Looking at history and trends make it a little easier to deal in absolutes or not being naive. Whichever works.

Unless you are going to use the kinect/voice recognition/entertainment aspect of the xbox, I don't think it is a crazy statement to say that the PS4 for $100 less is a better value.
A lot of people don't care about kinect etc and just want to game, for $100 less the ps4 makes more sense. You can't just dismiss the $100 price difference.

It can be both but I don't trust Microsoft.

MS is saying we will get there first but to do that we have to do this.
The importance of getting there first (cheap game steam model) could be a deciding factor later in this gens life cyle of what system people are using. No way you can get there first without limiting used games in some way.
It's not a sprint for MS right now to just whore out hardware and they are OK with that.
Sony, on the other hand, quietly sat there and let Microsoft fumble and flounder. And it worked. All the while, Sony hasn't alienated themselves and struck at the weakness of their competition. It was genius. It was well played. You can't argue that. Moreover, Sony has the means in place to adapt.
I'm not Sony homering. I will give Microsoft credit where it's due. But you are giving Microsoft WAY too much credit.

They know it will be a long road to get there and yes Sony is whoring out by playing to the lowest common denominator. It's not a bad thing at all and I will not knock them for doing it. A company in their weak financial position is smart to pander to the largest audience that will net them the most sales out of the gate. It's a lot like Dems buying votes with welfare.
I still think allowing used games hurts them in the long run though and if you understood what the Xbox engineer in the OP was saying you would see why.
Xbox is going to go to publishers after 6 months, a year, whatever and say look at used game sales on PS4 vs Xbox percentage wise. If it's less on Xbox then they are going to convince them they can afford to sale their games for less due to a non existent used games market on Xbox. Sony at this point will not have that luxury.
Xbox is also PROMISING publishers they will make something off of every license transfer including used games until they no longer exist.
You say adapt and that's fine but they can't go back on their promise to the consumer now and there is NO way to get to a steam model with a used games market. They simply can't co-exist.

That they might move the industry towards digital and still have $60 games
That's my main concern with this. They do all of this to bring the industry forward, but then still charge $60 for games since they think people will pay that.

If Microsoft wants to push the download games, then why don't they just offer lower prices on new games now. If I can download a new game for 49.99 as opposed to buying the disk for 59.99 I would consider downloading the game

Valid.
So far it seems all they are doing is pinky promising that when they go digital downloads, games will be cheaper.
History would probably suggest that XBone and PS4 games will be $69.95 at retail. And at least as of right now digital copies of games are the exact same price as retail copies.
