I don't understand this concept

If a movie fricks up great source material -- like Bonfire Of The Vanities or The Wild Wild West -- that is when you want to see a remake.

But why would you want to see a remake of something that was done right the first time? What is the point?

I personally don't want to see remakes of good movies, but it might make some kind of sense if the movie can be greatly improved by the use of improved special effects. Maybe some old science fiction movies would make sense. Maybe.

ETA: Oh and money for the studios.

I'd venture to guess nostalgia and wanting to see a possible new spin on it are at the top of the reasons.
But you're right, most of the time they are very bad.

Yep. I LOVE Indiana Jones. That being said, I don't want another one, didn't want the last one, and don't want them to attempt to "James Bond" the franchise with a new Indy.

Just come up with some new, fun, adventure franchises and move forward.

This for those that want to watch it.

Easy money and not a creative bone in their body for those that want to do it.

I think remakes should be damn near illegal. Unless the original was a total disaster. Force those frickers in Hollywood to come up with something original.

New technology.

People believe updating characters and storylines to fit in today's world or look like today's films will improve them.

For me, it's a very sensitive area and USUALLY mismanaged or misguided.

But honestly, when it comes to artists I really like, I wouldn't mind to see their take on something even if it was done right the first time. I think there is benefit in that.

It's like a good cover from music, sometimes the new take can even be better, or at least just as classic.

unless they pull a george lucas and literally change the original source material, THEN make it impossible to find the original in contemporary formats, then i don't get this response

What's not to get...they are remaking a movie I like, it's going to be terrible, I'm not going to watch it, but it aggravates me. I know they aren't getting rid of the original vacation forever. The End.

While some remakes are completely pointless (e.g psycho) and others are futile because the original, or just as likely a prior remake, is sublime, there is room for better production values, new technology and different interpretations. The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a great movie, but the 78 version is just as good or better. Subsequent remakes don't measure up though. The Batman reboot is vastly superior to the Burton crap. The BSG reimagination is amazing. Star Trek is another positive.

The point is that there can be a point to remakes from a creative standpoint. Unfortunately, a lot of remakes today have no creative purpose and are done because the producers think that there is a sure fire franchise that will make money regardless.
