Weekend box office: After Earth bombs, finishes 3rd with $27M total

Actually loses to Now You See Me in a pretty big upset, with Fast & Furious 6 staying on top for the second straight week.

Sony's After Earth, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, took in $27 million in its North American debut, compared to $28.1 million for Now You See Me, from Summit Entertainment.
Universal's Fast & Furious 6 beat both films to stay at No. 1 in its second weekend, declining 65 percent to $34.5 million for a stellar domestic cume of $170.3 million. The action pic earned another $75 million overseas for a dazzling worldwide total of $480.6 million.
Heading into the weekend, After Earth was expected to easily outpace Now You See Me with a $35 million to $40 million opening, still one of the lowest numbers for a summer film starring Smith, but in line with Tom Cruise's sci-fi adventure Oblivion.
Hindered by dismal reviews and a B CinemaScore, After Earth vastly underperformed. The pic -- starring Smith opposite his son, Jaden -- will now need to make a strong showing overseas if it is to make up its $130 million budget, plus a major marketing spend.

Wow I expected this movie to make a shite ton of money regardless of actual quality. Hope it is the final nail in Shammy's coffin. He's earned it.

There was an article a couple years ago with a bunch of Hollywood big shots talking about how Will Smith is the only GUARANTEED box office superstar left.
A combo of Will's own stupidity or arrogance or both (that thing that told him to sit out 4 years then come back with a Men In Black movie no one was looking for, then continue pushing his son into a spotlight he looks miserable in. The kid never smiles) + M Night Shyamalan was too much to overcome.
I have no idea how Shyamalan has lasted this long.
Martin Brest made Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run, Scent of A Woman, and Meet Joe Black, all in a row....then made Gigli and Hollywood said "frick YOU" and that guy has never worked again.
Im expecting to see an M Night video on kickstarter soon because I have no idea who would actually fund a film for the guy who torpedoed a summer release from the biggest box office star on the planet.

Don't know why so much blame is on Shyamalan. This is much more Will's frick up than his. Story by Will Smith. Casting by Will Smith. Produced by Will, Jada, Jada's brother, and Will's friend.
M.Night directed the shite but I'm sure he took marching orders so he could get the check.
