I'm sure it has been done and done again....

It depends on what you grew up saying and hearing, I guess.

If I am eating at home, it is supper. As in, "It's time to eat supper."

If I am going out to eat, it's dinner. As in "Would you like to go out to dinner tomorrow?"

What say you?

Breakfast, lunch, supper, unless someone invites us to dinner. In that case, it's dinner.

Dinner is when we go out to eat.

Supper is what we eat at home.

What do you call it if you go out to get the food but bring it home to eat? Like say from a food truck?

Supper usually being more casual I guess, and dinner more formal perhaps? I catch myself saying both, but I do use supper a lot.

Theoretically, I think dinner is the name of the big meal of the day. When the noon meal was the heavy meal, it was breakfast, dinner & supper. Sunday noon meal was always dinner.

Now in these days of some people eating big meals at both noon and evening, maybe we should call it feeding at the trough?

I dunno, I kind of use supper & dinner interchangeably.

I have never ever had supper. I do, however, have dinner every evening.

Growing up it was supper. Have switched to dinner. Maybe I should bring supper back, I kind of feel like I'm betraying my upbringing. I imagine the conversation with my daughter would go something like we're having steak for supper. What's supper dad? We're not having dinner anymore we're gonna call it supper from now on. Yes sir. What time is supper?
