I noticed that a couple rounds out of a box of Hornady's that I bought were recessed into the case like this. Are there dangers to shooting them?
The one on the right is just for comparison. The left one is the odd one.

Had some 223 that did the same thing.
Don't shoot them.

Don't shoot it. It could cause bad things to happen.

Has the round been chambered and unchambered a lot? This phenomenon is referred to as "bullet-setback." If you notice the problem early, you can usually shoot it with no problem. But when the bullet gets set back too far, it could create an unsafe pressure condition.
Personally, if the case was standard-pressure, I would shoot it. If it was a +P round, I would probably use a bullet puller to get the round out, and then re-seat it into the case. Then again, you may not have any reloading equipment to do this...

Never chambered. Just bought them and was loading them in to replace the FMJ's that I had in it.
I don't have any reloading equipment. Should I contact Hornady with the lot number, not for my benifits but for others who may not carch it, or not waste my time?

You would think they have some QC or this happened in transit from factory?

That's a very noble thing to do. A true American!
You could just drop them an email and see if you hear back.

You could lightly bump them with a bullet puller to get the rounds back to accepted OAL.

I'd definitely never shoot that ............. especially if it's .40 caliber.
