Sure, a show like Always Sunny is the same way, but the central joke is how terrible they are
I've always found this to be a central theme to Seinfeld.
They got thrown in jail for being such assholes.
The problem with Friends and HIMYM is that these shows aren't funny.
I prefer sitcoms that are funny.
But I cracked a smile when you said that Friends is a better show than Seinfeld. That was pretty funny, and is more than I can say for HIMYM, which I have watched a couple of times, never once coming close to cracking a smile, because, like I said, I prefer my sitcoms to be funny.

I'm reading everything Baloo is writing in this thread in Adam Carolla's rant voice and cadence.
Thanks. That should make this thread a little more lighthearted.

In Always Sunny, they know they're assholes.
In Seinfeld, they know they're assholes, "not that theres anything wrong with that."
That little difference makes a huge difference.

I don't really agree with the BBT portion of this statement. Sure, Sheldon is a dick, but he also sometimes comes around and can be a nice guy. All of the rest of the people crack jokes about each other, but it's all in fun. I don't find it to be mean spirited at all. It's a group of friends who really seem to care about each other, and they do help each other when needed. They also aren't typically assholes to everyone around them.
It goes back to the audience being in on a joke that the characters are not. We're supposed to laugh at them, not with them.

I think this is the crux of the argument.
I don't find the jokes or characters to be mean spirited while Baloo and Feauxzen do.
I've come to love the characters on the BBT and if you turned the chanel after being offended at the first nerd joke because it was mean, then you never got to love the people.
Some people can't admitt when a 1st impression sticks with them.

I've tried to pinpoint why I haven't REALLY enjoye Seinfeld when I rewatch it. I mean, I thought it was brilliant only some short years ago. Brilliant AND rewatchable, honestly. I've seen some episodes 5 and 6 times thanks to TBS. But something is different in that show and my expectations now, that's a really solid point.
I feel the same. This isn't the first time Baloo has articulated my thoughts better than I could.

I'm not. You played it, remember? You're the one who called it a chick show. I'm criticizing your deployment of the sex card, not playing it myself. I didn't say, "this show is great because of the way it appeals to women." You were the one who quoted and endorsed the argument that "this show isn't good because it is a chick show."
Now, you're trying to put the card back in the deck. Well, too late. I'm calling out the argument for the weak sauce that it is.
In fact, I rejected the concept of a "chick show". My wife loves watching stuff blow up. I tend to prefer emotional dramas. She still makes fun of me because I like Music and Lyrics. In fact, I like pretty much all Drew Barrymore rom coms. The concept that HIMYM is a "chick show" because it is about relationships is one I explicitly rejected. I do so again.
There is no such thing as a chick show. If you think there is, you are simply denying yourself some potential quality entertainment. Get over your hang ups.

I get that, but the way I read his statement was that he was saying the characters are bad and cynical people, and I don't agree with that. Obviously we are laughing at them because of how silly Sheldon is and how everyone has to put up with him. You're also laughing at them, because they are nerds, which is fine. I'm a nerd myself, and I understand some things we do are silly

Not for everyone, which is why a lot of people just don't like the show.

There is no BBT hate. It wins Emmys. HIMYM does not. BBT also has higher ratings and its ratings are only going up.
I'm a Friends guy. I don't watch HIMYM because I think it's just a poor man's Friends; I've thought that from the get-go. That's not a good thing to be compared in that way to a game-changing series like Friends. It means that HIMYM doesn't really break any new ground.
I would argue that BBT does and that's what makes it a better show.

To deny the "maleness" of this board and the love it gives a show that is targeted to an audience with low T , no matter the junk between their legs, is to cover your eyes.
As far as me playing a card, I used it to illustrate the absudity of the situation. I never said I hated anyone. You, on the other hand, used it to discredit me personally.
There's a difference.
All was civil until I was acussed of hating women based off of...what? I'm still trying to take the logical leap that you did.
BTW: I don't hate HIMYM and that's not what the threads about. I just don't watch it.

It's partly this, but I also think the Wolowitz character is quite troublesome. They do enjoy watching him fail, and a lot of the jokes in the show are about humiliating him and Sheldon. I actually think Leonard and Koodrapaali are pretty good, sympathetic characters, and they keep bringing me back in. In fact, aside from the ridiculous can't talk to women bit, I think he is the funniest and most interesting character on the show.
And I really think Johnny Gaelecki can sell the material. He's a pretty good actor. Leonard holds the show together. Even when the show descends into "NERRRRRRRRDS!" humor, he keeps the quality of the show above the material. I rather like him, and I find the show pleasant.

See above, Project got it right. It was nothing to do with mean spirited characters, but a mean spirited audience. You aren't laughing with them, you're not supposed to.

So,
why does this board pile on BBT while having a season long thread for HIMYM?
I have to admit that I never looked into the season long thread. Does it have regular posters?

Meh. On that same token, are you not laughing at Joey on Friends, because he is an idiot? What about HIMYM? The only two characters I laugh with are Barney and Marshall. To a smaller extent, I sometimes laugh with the girls, but I am certainly not laughing with Ted. I'm laughing at him, because I find him to be a douche. I think you are laughing at people on most shows to a certain extent. I take BBT for what it is. A show to entertain me. I realize it's not breaking new ground, and I don't take it too seriously. As I said earlier, I'm a nerd, but it really doesn't bother me that you are laughing at and not with the characters.

I have watched it and I think it's a poor man's version Friends, so, no, I don't think it breaks any new ground. It's narrative style is cute, but it's heavy-handed and a ploy that seems to say, "Look how groundbreaking and edgy we are!"
Love NPH on that show--I do appreciate the fact that a gay actor has finally broken through being cast as heterosexual cad. In that sense, NPH's performance is groundbreaking, but the show itelf is not.
