I understand that David Caruso is often made fun of for this, but why was it a bad choice at the time?
Was his movie career flop seen from a mile away or something?

The biggest idiot was without question Maclean Stevenson. His career never recovered.
How many great roles did he expect to get in one lifetime? He was no leading man -- which may have been part of the problem. He auditioned for the role of Hawkeye, and supposedly was always bitter he didn't get it.
MS leaving MASH was even more disastrous since Henry Blake was one of my favorite supporting TV characters of all time, and an integral part of the show. His leaving damaged it permanently, and began a very long downhill slide -- perhaps the biggest in TV history.

It was mainly due to poor choices in films/
I liked Kiss Of Death but Jade was a godawful clusterfrick that hurt everyone involved between Caruso, director William Friedkin, screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, etc.

Katherine Hiegl was also stupid to leave Grey's Anatomy. She just upped and left because she thought her movie career was about to take off after the success of Knocked Up. She hasn't been in anything of relevance since.

No one here will care, but Robert Horton left the old western Wagon Train when it was #1 in the ratings.
Robert Horton (r) with Ward Bond on Wagon Train:
Pernell Roberts would follow Horton's lead a few years later, leaving Bonanza when it was #1. But after many years in the wilderness Roberts would eventually get another hit series (Trapper John, MD). Horton never did.

Yeah, tasteless joke. His death was pretty terrible.

Henry Blake was my favorite supporting TV characters too. Though I could tolerate Colonel Potter I utterly despised BJ. So Wayne Rogers was a big blow too. Plus, the reason the show started going downhill imho was because Wayne Rogers left along with McClean Stevenson. Trapper John and Hawkeye were supposed to be equals in the beginning of MASH. Alan Alda literally stole the show and once Wayne Rogers and McClean Stevenson left Alda was without a doubt the ruler of the show. He gradually gained more and more control which caused the show to decline because his vision was inferior to the creators.

Rashida Jones - The Office.
But I still get my fix of her on Parks. Ann Perkins!

Steve Carrell from the office. Had he actually been in a movie worthwhile since the departure I would understand, but he's basically played Michael Scott in all of the ones he has been in. He nearly killed it Bc last season was pretty horrible. It took until just about into this season for it to become actually laugh out loud funny again.

Oh, and Lisa Bonet sure did a poor job of leaving both the Cosby Show and A Different World.
Well to be fair, she didn't choose to leave The Cosby Show.

Was thinking this. She apparently was a huge bitch upon leaving, so much so that the creator told her to take a hike when she wanted to come back. Should've just killed her off. That show has really gone downhill the last few years. They killed off half the cast, and I havent really watched it in the last two of three years.
No love for the other Seacrest from American Idol Season 1?

Brian Dunkleman. I don't know if that was his choice. But he's made a decent career out of making fun of himself for that. (By decent I mean, he's touring regularly as a stand up and has been on a few TV shows poking fun at himself)

Crazy Stupid Love came out around that time, and I thought that was a great movie. Looking at his IMDB profile, he hasn't done much of anything since leaving the Office. I want to say I read something about him wanting to take a little time off.
