With all the talk about Dan Stevens and DA, I was thinking of other famous actors who left successful TV shows too early. Who do you think is the biggest idiot for leaving their highly successful TV show to languish in obscurity? Add more that you can think of. Here are a few to ponder:

Dan Stevens-Downton Abbey 25 of 26 episodes (still running)
Wayne Rogers-MASH 73 of 251 episodes
McClean Stevenson-MASH 70 of 251 episodes
Jeffery Hunter-Star Trek Was the first Captain of The Enterprise but left after the pilot because his wife said he was a movie star. My vote for biggest idiot.
Pernell Roberts-Bonanza 199 of 429 episodes
Shelly Long-Cheers 124 of 271 episodes

David Carusso - NYPD Blue, poster child for this idiocy.

Took him a long time to climb back after his movie career flop.

Sasha Alexander kinda fell off the planet after leaving NCIS. Was a while before getting the Rizzoli and Isles gig.

I don't have much to contribute, so I'll just do this:

Jeffery Hunter

What a douche.

Agree with this. Heck, Ziva could have still be added to the team to add the Mossad aspect and more hotness.

Hunter also died in 1969, after Star Trek became a cult success but before it really took off in reruns during the 70s.

It would have been hard to do a revival movie of Star Trek in the 70s if they had a completely new captain instead of returning the entire main cast.

To take the opposite tact, Clooney, Marguiles, and Edwards each left ER at pretty much the precise right time. While Edwards isn't a megastar like Clooney, he got out right before the show's massive dip in quality. So good on him.

Oh, and Lisa Bonet sure did a poor job of leaving both the Cosby Show and A Different World.

David Carusso-I had forgotten about him. Good choice, he was an idiot for leaving NYPD Blue.

I'm a huge Shelley Long fan but I don't think Cheers would have remained as successful for as long if she had stuck around. The Ted-Diane storyline was pretty much played out not to mention the entire cast hated her guts.

Farrah Fawcett left Charlie's Angels after one season...

Suzanne Sommers left Three's Company early too...

Yes I'm old.

I think she was allowed to do films on her off-time from the shows but Bill Cosby fired her after watching Angel Heart.

Rob Lowe in West Wing.

I'm still mad about that.

Yeah but he died from the after effects of an explosion on a movie set. He may not have made that film if he was a TV star. So quitting Star Trek may have killed him and tossed an amazing career away.
