It's Lent.

Jiggles, seriously, I like my roux the way it is, but if he like his with peanut butter, what's the big deal?
Not a big deal. I was just thinking about how someone would think to put peanut butter in their roux and the misinterpretation of the saying "cook your roux until its the color of peanut butter" is the only explanation I could fathom.

I'm still waiting for someone to provide an explanation of why this is a good idea or how it improves gumbo.

how it improves gumbo
this is what I want to know
Lee just says it's awesome but won't tell us what type of flavor it adds to the gumbo

The OP, who may or may not be an asshat, lost me when I noticed his "gumbo" was lacking the copious amount of okra and tomatoes which constitute a true gumbo.
Forget the PB roux add-in and its supposed flavor enhancement.

I've read that if you cook a roux while an ear of corn is stuck up your arse that it will improve the flavor of the roux. Perhaps the OP can test this out. My bet is that white corn would be better than yellow.

You sound racist

That's not funny, CIT. Tone it down. Mr. Jiggles is being an arse. Spells are being conjured up and I know you don't want to be a part of those.
No,there has been no explanation that I recall as to how it improves the taste of roux or gumbo. I'm not curious about it, though. Mine needs no improvement.

Having a good laugh at an absurd comment even on F&D is allowe even if it's Lent

Sorry if I'm being an arse. It's just that the peanut butter thing makes no sense and the guy can't even tell us why it would make it better.
If I came in here with a photo essay of frying eggs with peanut butter I would expect a certain amount of ridicule and skepticism.

Absurd is correct, but in a sad way.
Mr. Jiggles, just because you would expect ridicule and your example is worse than this one, doesn't mean you have to dish it out in such a way.
You'll do well on the OT.
Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

I once saw a guy from "Down da bayou" put coffee into his gumbo, said it gave it a richer flavor... and eggs. Never saw either of those before.
Posted on 2/15/13 at 6:46 pm to Neil McCauley
I've heard of both of those. Eggs are actually pretty common like potato salad and sweet potato. Someone else here put something odd in gumbo, but I can't recall what it was. Might have been meatballs or something along those lines.

Maybe Jiggy's example isn't great, but he does have a point. A lot of people come to the FDB looking to improve their cooking, or reap the benefit of others who have a broader experience that can enhance their appreciation of food. I think that shite like the OP does a disservice to the board. Anyone who is interested in or really loves food should be open to trying new ideas and techniques. But there's nothing wrong with mocking people who show up with stupid ideas that have no basis in theory or practice. If you want to maintain the credibility and integrity of this board, then it's appropriate to point out the inherent stupidity of what are, ultimately, stupid ideas.

Damn, Cool, it's Lent and people don't have to be downright ugly about it. People who lurk and want to learn don't post because they read Mr. Jiggles type of asshat responses. Nothing wrong with pointing out the error of one's ways, but don't plow 'em in the ground unless they're assholes, too, of course.

Otis puts Hershey Bars in his chile, and he recommended that I try it.. A year or so ago when I made chile and happened to remember what Otis had said, unfortunately I didn't have any Hershey Bars.. But, I did have some peanut butter and added a rather large glob of Jiffy to the pot... Well, guess what, it tasted great and added something.. I don't know exactly what it added, maybe a smoothness, a balance that tied the spices together... And, guess what, I don't care what it added, it tasted good, and that's what I was trying to accomplish in the first place.. Soooooo..
Go ahead and mock my arse if it makes you feel good..Take a few quarters out of your pocket, look for a pay phone if you can find one and call someone that gives a shite.... I don't..
