Which Movies Were Actually Much Better Than The Books?

This seems to happen only on rare occasions. I’m not so much into the obvious reasons why this happens as to the actual movies you think are better than the books.
And, I know the astute group of movie and book experts here can give insight into these movies.
I’ll start with possibly the most obvious one and that’s the “Wizard Of Oz”. The screen play to this movie adaptation is so astoundingly written in my opinion. The way it’s woven into a dream sequence is spectacularly done. It’s really much different than Frank L. Baum’s book. And, of course, there’s the outstanding acting, the costumes and even the addition of color in the land of Oz. Overall, it really captures the ideas of both fantasy and that of a dream state.
I’m sure this topic has probably been done in the past, but I’m curious what you have to offer.

Or as Mel Brooks says in "The History of the World Part 1" (as he's walking down the mountain and drops a tablet) "I have for you these 15, er, 10, TEN Commandments!"

Fight Club and American Psycho. I don't know if we're counting comic books as books but Kick-arse.

True Blood (not a movie, I know) is way better than the books. The Sookie Stackhouse novels are a pile of crap

KickAss was on TV the other night. It was funny to watch how they tried to bleep everything or change the words.
The movie only got 1 star, but I have to put it as one of my top superhero movies. Hit Girl's fight sequences are really awesome and there are some really funny parts to this movie. It's nonstop and also from now on every time I hear the song "Crazy" I think of the dope smoking scene in the Mistmobile.

Alright I'll say it: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
No Tom Bombadil, etc.

The music (both score and soundtrack) make that movie better than it has any right to be.

Oz the book was way way better than the movie. I don't like the movie at all, but recently read the book with my kid and thought it was pretty good.

This has to be the No. 1 answer. Even though the show isn't that good, the books are that bad.

To be fair. The Godfather (the movie) is universally near the top of the greatest films of all times lists. The book doesn't make many best of lists.
